Jerry Work's Domino Manual

Thanks to all for the kind words and I am glad so many of you find the manuals useful.  I write these for Festool and am compensated to do so.  Festool, therefore, is the one who can and should post it when they finish their internal review.  It is important that they have the opportunity to review anything they have sanctioned to make sure I didn't inadvertently say or show something they feel is incorrect or inaccurate.  While I only include things I personally have done so I know they work and represent safe practice in my studio, Festool staff here or in Germany may find something they question.  So, much as I enjoy sharing with and learning from this group, we will have to wait until Festool reviews this manual and comes to the conclusion it is something they want to post on their web site or include with their product.

In my opinion one of the things I appreciate most about my Festool acquirements is each item is an example of something that was not rushed into the market place.

Not half-baked, half-cocked, serial number 001 to xxx takes this part number, serial number xxx+1 to zzzzzz that part number, recall notices, etc., etc., etc.

I'm sure these problems exist, as they do in any enterprise of this type, but are kept to such a small extent as to be a non-issue to the user of their products.

So while I'm as impatient as the next guy, I appreciate a company that 'sticks-to-their-guns' on 'getting-it-right'.  I'm also sure when Jerry's manual comes out, it will be of like quality.

I agree Loren.  I'm eager to see Jerry's manual, too.  But its more important to get it right than it is to get it quickly.

I retired from the software industry and was involved in creating dozens of manuals.  A good editor is worth his/her weight in gold.  Personally, I think its just impossible for anyone, even Mr Work , to see their own work in the same way a new reader would.

I really appreciate Festool sponsoring the enhanced manuals and workshopdemos!  It adds a lot of value to the tools.  Every time I read or view one of them, I realize how I'm just starting to scratch the surface on what the tools can do!

One thing I found a bit confusing with the new instructions was the text around calibrating the cursor/site window on the front of the domino.

If you look at the domino as you would when using it, the instructions are backwards. It's only when you look at the instructions a few times and realize you need to look at the domino from the front that the instructions work. Unfortunately, that can make for a long calibration session if you screw it up the first time

FWIW, on my domino, I had to go to the extreme end of the calibration (moved the site window as far as it would go) and I'm still not quite 100% lined up. I think it is well within my current margin of error, though. I'll need to do more testing before I take action on it.

Im hanging out for it as iv been looking at his other manuals and work and its first rate. The other manuals ive read on the Domi are fairly basic and uninspiring.

Rick im not having any difficulties, its just after 12 months of Domi use your brain gets a bit stale, and as I have only been made aware of Jerrys work in the last 3 or so weeks and looking at his web site and other manuals im very, very impressed. (I love his workshop/studio)

He offers a different perspective on things and im realy looking foward to seeing what he has to offer regarding the use of the Domino.

Oh, and I dont know what a bloke near my area called Rob has to with this ?

I also am looking forward to Jerry's manual.  I have read his dust extractor and sanding manual and it is good. His site is very impressive, too. We are lucky to have a good writer  like Jerry doing Festool's manuals.

Pete, I agree 100%. When I first got my Domino I did 8 test cuts using the sight line and ALL 8 had the upper line on one of the work pieces to the right of the lower piece's pencil line. So it didn't appear to be my technique since all 8 had the same error. I then attempted to adjust the plastic sight glass and worked over two hours trying to make it right and never did get it back to even the original accuracy (which isn't acceptable). I've posted elsewhere here asking for some help in calibrating it. Also sent a note to Bob M. At this point, I feel I can't rely on and use the sight line, unless I make one side of the set up using the looser mortise cut setting and the other cut the tight one and then adjust the fit manually.

I suspect this design feature could use some revisiting by Festool.

Like you, I also at first tried adjusting the sight glass the wrong way based on the way the instructions were written.
