For a long time I wanted a decent drill press and looked into the Hammer DS 120 as one might have red at this thread. I still haven't found any user information on the Hammer whatsoever and therefore dived into Rick's suggestion on a Jet and ended up paying more then I intended... but that's how things go  [embarassed].
After using it for a week now I can say with confidence that, oh boy, am I happy with this machine. Of course I'll never know how it compares to the Hammer though.
The table and fence and variable speed adjustment was what gave me the breakthrough. Something that's hard to find on a drill press if you'd ask me. When having a little more time I want to look at a way to fit my 1400 under the table. I think it might be possible with a little fiddling. Furthermore my Festo 26 dust extractor with the 36 hose fits just beautifully and does a great job when workpieces are not to chunky (otherwise it's closing the dust port on the table as it did when using 4cm material.) The variable speed makes me smile every time I have to adjust it. Useful too is this adaptor thingy that came with the Centrotec 2011 set which allows me to use my Festo drill bits, forstner bits etc. What an invention  ;D

As you can see in the following picture I made a huge upgrade. Don't laugh though.. this hand-cranked machine has served me very well! unfortunately it has been standing outside during last winter.

Mauri, that's an awesome bit of kit, congratulations!  Makes mine look like a kid's toy!   The new Jet looks nice too  [big grin] [poke] [thumbs up]  .

I'd worry that the centrotec adaptor might not be strong enough for drill press use, presumably you've found no problems with it though?

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Mac,

No problems so far and in my opinion it looks hefty enough. And last week I hogged out (is that correct English?) a huge amount of material using a centrotec 35mm forstner bit before routing the edges strait in a hunk of cedar. To prevent confusion, I mean this bit [attachimg=#] (#496450)

Hallo
I am looking in to a Stand or Table Drill and came across the "new" Jet on the Axminster site. One of the customers reports was of flexing in the table.

He wrote "But table tends to bend during drilling, especially when using larger diameter drill bits or forstner bits, where vertical force increases. Also it can turn left/right during operation since table clamping is not strong enough to prevent horizontal table movement!! I would expect more from Jet in that part."

Have you had any experience with these issues?
I would appreciate your feed back, as this machine in in the top 3 of my choices and is the most expensive.

Now you have had the machine for a while how do you rate it.

Thanks

Pip

Hi Pip,

I havent had any flex on the Jet. Still like it very much mainly because of it's variable speed and the extendable table and it has a fence which for repeatable drilling, I often use. The only con I found is that the chuck sometimes drops out. The other day I ordered a Schröder chuck (dieter schmid) for use in the Jet as the chuck that comes with it doesnt take drill bits smaller then 3mm, and I do use 2 and 2,5mm bits sometimes. (i.e. the Schröder chuck will be fitted in the Jet's chuck)

Regards,
Mauri

Hi,
I'm also very satisfied with my JDP 2800. Especially the variable speed which I use all the time. However I have had a couple of chuck drops myself. I wonder if this is due to bad tolerance in the arbor cone? And sometimes the drills gets stuck in the chuck en I use big drills, so I have to use a big plier to open the chuck. This might be common with big drills, but I'm a little sceptic to the chuck delivered with the JET. I'm on the fence of buying another chuck.

Anyone that knows anything about chucks and chuck arbors are welcome to chime in and share some knowledge..

Also, I'm not very impressed with the depth stop. It's quite cumbersome to adjust and this definitely has flex in it. I'm thinking of ways to reinforce the depth stop. But this would include drilling and tapping in the cast iron housing, which I'm hesitating at.

Haven't had any problems with table flex. But I might not have payed attention to this. I'll look out for is and measure some.

Thanks Guys,

This is really helpful feed back. I am really taken by the variable speed and the table.
So I might just go for it.

Good to know about the chuck.
I know nothing about them but just off the top of my head what about a thin wrapping of Teflon tape that plumbers use on screw fittings. Mikro thin, Might just take that slack out of the Conus and it wont stick.
Just an idea.

Thanks for your report especially on the depth gage. Look forward to your solution. ;)

Pip
