Well the rellies talk about a tracksaw/wheelbarrow contraption that they used just north of you.

The would wait until it was a particularly bitterly cold night and then go out and plow or sweep any snow off the ice.
At the crack-o-down they would put long criss cross cuts in the ice a foot deep... Then bust out the blocks and stack them in the ice house between sawdust for insulation.
