I'm headed to California next week to do one of Jory's shop classes. I was wondering if anyone else is planning on doing one? I'll be sure to post some pictures next weekend.

I will be following your thread as his classes were the ones I was most interested in. Have fun!

Cheers. Bryan.

Ya, I'll also be paying attention to this post/thread. I didn't even know that he was teaching classes...should be a wonderful experience.

Didn't know who the guy was, so I googled him. Appears from the first few results that he makes truly excellent furniture and truly terrible/cheesy Festool promotional videos.

Here are some pictures from today. Jory's shop is really cool and all of the people I met today are also equally cool. It has been alot of fun hanging out, talking, shop and working with every one. Today was legs and top case of the night stand. tomorrow is the coved drawer and stand back. My glue up was intense. Had to move very very quick.

Thanks for all the photos.  Wish I was there!

It's amazing to see that much Festool in one place.

I was surprised at the amount of sawdust on the floor until I noticed the honking big pattern bit in the 1400.

and no hose on the 1400.

Thanks for posting the photos... [thumbs up]

The leg pattern appears to have been previously made, which makes sense.

How about the leg trim fixtures, were you responsible for fabbing them up on-site or were they also pre-made?

How will you get your project home once it's finished?

Thanks for the photos. Very interesting view to his processes and his new shop
You must be in on one of the first or the first of his classes.
Tim

I wanted to make it to that class since I live just less than an hour south from him in Santa Maria. But alas, gotta pay for a wedding this October.

[member=45856]blaszcsj[/member] where did you travel from? And did you enjoy California outside of the classes?

maybe you should also google the terms "truly terrible videos" and you'll probably find something other than his stuff.  i'm sure you'll come across the never ending supply of shakily shot, bad audio, body in front of the camera, etc that will cover the umpteenth unboxing of the same tool with no new insights whatsoever.  usually accompanied by the disclaimer:  "sorry for the poor video guys but i didn't think of spending the time to craft something better so thanks for wasting your time watching my tripe..."--or words to that effect.
i'm fully aware that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that everyone is a critic, but in all fairness perhaps you should reserve "truly terrible" for something that is actually that.  i happen to find his videos to be very nicely done (not necessarily perfect by any means).  but he seems to spend a lot of time crafting a nicely edited video for the viewer to enjoy and also showing the tools at work on some rather exceptional pieces.  his great efforts should be lauded and encouraged.  off the cuff mudslinging is truly below the belt here.
...and that's my saturday morning editorial folks!...

Yeah "truly terrible" might have been a little over the top. But they are quite cliche with the soft music, soft focus background and the oh just so deliberate pace of dialogue with the marketing dept approved soundbites at optimal points, punctuated with just the right amount of silence and visual metaphors, etc.

I don't even know if he produces his own videos and didn't mean to sling mud if he does, I was purely commenting on the Festool branded advertising videos I saw.

The Festool videos were filmed and edited by a Festool hired film crew I believe.  With other similar videos - and I assume this one also - there have not been pre-arranged scripts.  The words and thoughts of those profiled are their own in other words.

Peter

Need to chime in here... His videos are really good! I was involved (a business) in post production in Hollywood and I've been in many post production bays over the years. He (festool?) actually puts in a lot of time in the production and post. He's using a dslr (on a slider in some shots) and it's pretty obvious the shooter knows what he's doing. So your (comment)  entitled to your opinion.

I'm pretty sure your a layperson and not involved with film/video production; so to evaluate a video next time turn off the audio. Watch the cut for timing, framing, focus, angles etc. do that a few times to watch the video for continuity. In an NLE app you can turn off various tracks, like the scratch track (reference) m&e, sweetened audio and foley. So with trained ears you can find faults and then "fix it in post." Before the track is flattened.

You're absolutely right I am a layperson to video production. Buy my point wasn't so much about the technical quality of the video.

My comments were, that as a Festool customer/joiner who uses tools, my reaction to videos like that are that they are just over-produced and come across as insincere. Peter pointed out above, that they're not scripted, but nevertheless I'm sure there's some form of compensation and naturally people know the sort of thing a company would want to be said "in their own words" to secure the approval and subsequent compensation.

So in summary, my criticism wasn't about the technical aspects of the video, just that that type/style of video isn't, IMO stylistically appropriate and a bit transparent, invoking an "Oh god, here we go..." type reaction; a bit like when celebrities do begging adverts for whatever charity they align themselves with, to make them feel less guilty about the materialistic life they lead.

Here we go... Haha. If you think they are lacking in some asthmatic manner I'm sure festool or Jory would invite you to send them a revised script, a demo reel, a better music score or better yet you can be a post super(visor) and then make the final post decisions or you can direct their next video. There's always room in Los Angeles for talented people and I could put you in touch with several commercial houses. It's pretty easy to be an armchair critique and yes these vids go through a committee and several (iterations) cuts - starting with pulls, rough cuts, finish cuts and master. I'm not here to educate you, but you need to sit down in front of an NLE like FCP or Avid before you start critiquing others. It's very difficult, expensive and laborious and technical to cut a video, that has production value. I started doing production in 1990 and quite frankly I was okay, but there were shooters that were far better than myself. And the same applies to post (editors). So I found my niche and ran with it for over 20 years. Suffice to say I think your off base, but your certainly entitled to your own uninformed opinion.

As an aside I met a layperson who wrote a script for Doritos in a contest and he won and beat out everyone including the big commercial houses. I believe it was around 2005 - 2006. It was aired during the SuperBowl, and it was very creative. He got paid $15k which is really nothing, but he was happy. So it just goes to show that sometimes raw talent and creativity will outdue knowledge and experience over even the biggest players. So who knows you (the OP) might be the next Speilberg.

So, back on topic -

THANKS for posting these pictures, looks like a fantastic shop to work in. I look forward to more photos and the end results of the work!
