Just a minor 'Ooops'...

Fitted a kitchen last week - the customer had an old dining table with a pine top they had sanded back. They asked if I could trim 6" off either end, as it was a bit too big. We'd already taken it off the base to make some room to work, and hadn't gotten round to putting the legs back on so I put it on my small work table & a stack of systainers.

Measured & put the rail down, and with my TS55 cut the first end - no problem.

Second end, measured & put the rail down, and began to cut. About 1/3rd the way across heard a strange, high-pitched noise, but didn't really pay much attention. As I got to about 2/3rds across, the noise stopped. All seemed OK until I pulled the waste piece away...

I usually check the thickness of the piece I'm cutting & set the depth so it's 1-2mm below. Since the tabletop was approx. 40mm thick (and I was in a rush) I didn't bother, I just set it on full depth... [embarassed]

Aye, that's a shame. Be glad though it is only a systainer lid which you can replace for 15 dollars. I made the same mistake a couple of years ago on one of my mother's dining room chairs, made out of solid palisander wood.  [embarassed]

Classic, that's a first on me  [big grin]  Didn't think to stop for a look when you heard the noise change  [blink]

Shouldn't laugh, i will probably do the same next week now  [scared]

Hey, these things happen.  [eek]  If I were to report here all the minor goofs like this one  that I make, I would probably be starting an average of three new threads a week.  [embarassed]

Haha, I think it adds character, Jonny, just like a well used MFT3 top. Nice one  [wink]

No worries Jonny. Try that on a clients finished kitchen counter!!!!  [crying] I was too lazy to set up saw horses and just placed a piece of counter top on their kitchen counter. Happily cutting away only to realise I had cut into the counter instead of passed its edge.
That was 8 years ago and I have NEVER made that mistake again. You can smile. It could have been a lot worse. I still go stand in front of the mirror and kick myself every time I think of it. Thanks for bringing up old emotions and feelings of idiocy.
I'll go kick myself again now.....  [embarassed]...... man it's gonna hurt  [scared]

This thread simply begs for a Systainer sacrifical-topper attachment?

Using Systainers for cutoff supports, impromptu sawhorses, mobile MFT...  Maybe a piece of 3/4" with "divots" for the latches to hook onto.  Hrrm.. or a phenolic attachment plate with the 'divots', non-slip coating, with replaceable plywood top.. soft brass screws...

Very nice idea.

Best Idea I've heard in a long time.  I'm always looking for an impromptu support to cut that last bit of material, usually right after I've broken-down and stored the MFT cutting station.

I see some R&D time in the shop in my near future.
