Kapex Dust Collection Modification

Just wanted to share a little modification I've been tinkering with. So far I'm very pleased with the results !!

I made a few of these, playing with the length of the bristles, making multiple cuts at different bevels and angles, and I have no concerns with any interaction with the blade !

I feel it works much better than the original one. If you look closely, the attachment of the bristles is onto the factory shroud.

I felt I could improve upon the shroud, as the larger dust particles always made it underneath the rubber shroud.....this made a huge difference !

I have sacrificial facings on the left and right moveable fence and these extend into the centre to form a zero clearance splinter reducer. I find that the original dust shroud does catch on that and although is deforms itself to get by with no problem it does reduce its dust catcher capability whilst distorted.

I imagine that the bristles do not all distort at once which might improve the overall dust collection.

A nice idea and worth seeing again after a couple of months or regular use. Meanwhile you might like to see whether you can market the idea.

very ingenious.  This got posted over on BTP and I thought it was a GREAT idea!

I "upgraded" my axialglide to the kapex boot and it made a huge difference but I REALLY like this idea. 

What are you using for bristle material/holder??  It looks pre-made and then attached to the festool boot but just cut to length?

Nice idea and execution. I have the same issue that Peter  described with the zero clearance  on the fence. I think that this is the fix for my issue.

The bristles in this length and configuration  funnily enough are very hard to come by unless your order 15 miles of the stuff !!!!

We are fine tuning the design, but based upon the interest I'm seeing, we will get a batch of these made up  [smile]

We are working on getting a batch of these made up, so they should be available soon.

The brushes are frequently used in CNC dust shoes and they are available via McMaster-Car at http://www.mcmaster.com/#strip-brushes/=vlslfv.

I have used the same process on many of my tools also.  I have 4" brushes around my tablesaw shrouds and cut with virtually no dust. 
I also did something similar on my Makita sliding chopsaw.  I have been using NGP bust seals as we use them extensively in the commercial door work we do.  I am glad to see there is a source with PVC holders as all of NGP's are aluminum.  I use 1" brushes clipped to my 55 and 75 when I am cutting plastics as even Festools extraction does not capture that mess.

Look about halfway down the page for "Easy-Cut Strip Brushes and Holders"

And it's cheap - $2.28 per foot for a 1" brush, and $3-$4 per foot for the holder, depending on style. You could easily make two of these (because you have to buy a minimum of a foot of material) for less than $10. That doesn't count your time, of course.
