Kapex laser alignment

Thanks guys.  I will go through the alignment again.  It was fine then my last project I noticed everything was out of alignment.

Unfortunately, the lasers seem to get knocked out of alignment periodically no matter how gently you try to transport the saw.

So I have by no means gotten fully acquainted with the new Kapex, but everything was dead nuts square and flat. I tried the lasers and I'm wondering if the lasers should be right against each side of the pencil mark? Right now they are equidistant from the pencil mark and I have been getting it right in between. The blade tracks the pencil mark perfectly, but I have just played around, not cut anything to length. Definitely a great first impression, just set up the extension wings.

One thing that I noticed is that changing miter saws is weird. I found that out when I got the Lil Makita to. I guess when you are really used to something, my case seven years, it's hard to change, Eric

Totally agree..Think of how hard it will be for you to change from a saw like the Kapex.  [wink]

It's honestly a lot like getting a new girl, they are the same species yet so different, Eric

I think you should set them however you like them ..... left, right or split the line.

Seth

I don't really bother with the lasers. I keep them parallel to the blade and close to the cut. I use the lasers as a reference only, I set them about an 1/8" away from my cut, drop the saw head and do the creep method till I hit my mark.

Eric,

I have mine leave the line. In other words the laser is exactly on the line and the blade cuts precisely up to it. Just seems to work well for me that way.

Seth

I see two lines. One on one side and one on the other. It seems like they outline where the blade is. It cuts perfectly down that on a 11 3/4 piece, but a hair shy on the measurement. Seems like i want it to be to the right of the line, not taking it? For all i know, i could be doing wrong. Havent really investigated this enough, but i like Daves idea of using lasers in conjunction with the creep method. Eric

I have my lasers set up where the inside edge of each laser outlines the kerf of the cut.

That sounds like how I set them, Seth.

I want the inside of the laser line to be at the outside of the kerf. It doesn't make sense to me any other way. If the laser isn't shooting parallel to the blade, it would change relative position on the work piece as the head moves up and down. Having the inside edge of the laser on the outside edge of the teeth, one can tell exactly where the cut will be.

Yes, that is how mine are.  In reality it has less to do with the line and more to do with the kerf/blade.

Yes, this is how I have mine adjusted as well, just seems to make sense. I can put my mark inside the laser line if I want to take or a smidge inside the laser line to leave it.

I am a big fan of the creep as well, just fine it's harder to sight the blade on this saw than other saws I have owned, so i end up relying on the lasers. They do work well once you dial em in and get used to them. I need all the help I can get so I use whatever helps me most. Between the lasers and the angle finder this saw is a blessing.

About to step into the garage with all this intel and see what's up, Eric

I go with Tom and Seth's method and creeping up to the mark is a thing (happily) of the past.  A little extra fussing with adjustment pays off big in time saved never having to creep up to a mark.  The lasers are one of the greatest features of the Kapex and when I have used a saw without them, it is like going back to the stone age.
