Just finished up my 1st bed frame build. Used the df500 to attach the rails to the head/foot boards and Rockler hardware to make it easy to take apart:https://www.rockler.com/heavy-duty-wrought-steel-bed-rail-fasteners-4-pack-select-size.
Used over-sized mortises on the top/bottom of the headboard to allow for seasonal expansion of the panel after posting on here about the best way to do it:https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/...-movement-in-a-headboard/msg599968/#msg599968

Glad to have this build completed!

What a beauty

Nice job, love the details/proportions.  [big grin]

How thick are the side rails, 1" thick or greater?

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words!

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] the side rails were milled from rough 5/4 stock and ended up being .93inch thick.

That is very elegant, gearhound; I trust you are delighted with it - and justly proud of it too!

Very nice and something I'd like to do.

Any shots available with the mattress in it, that I might use to gain upper management (SWMBO) approval?

Thanks,

RMW

Wow!  Great design.

Do you happen to have a drawing / model you could share?  Starting to think about building a king size bed in walnut!

Really nice!  Now time to install the baseboard, yes? Perhaps some crown and upgraded door casing to have the room be worthy of that nice bed  :)

Trim has been on my mind lately as that is my current project.

Thanks! Yeah, I need to get the trim installed. I laid the hardwood flooring and have been putting off installing new baseboards. My wife just finished re-painting the room tonight, so I'm going to have to get rolling on it soon unfortunately. Any suggestions for specific crown/door-casing/baseboards to source?

Thanks guys! I'll try to get a shot of the bed all made up in the morning. I unfortunately don't have a model or any drawings...I'm terrible at sketchup so I actually just made a full scale mockup of the bed from construction grade timber and we ended up using it for a few months and tweaked with the dimensions. I really need to commit to learning sketchup as I've now got full scale mockups of chairs/benches/and a bed!

Curious what you changed from the prototype to the finished walnut model?

With all the extra furniture you may need to purchase a second home.  [smile]  [poke]

I ended up making the rails wider so the mattress would sit a bit lower and some minor adjustments to the overall length/width to fit my specific mattress and bedding. Mockup was just standard king-size dimensions I found online. Knowing sketchup could have sped things up a lot, but I also like to build some things with weird angles and getting to
test out joinery on cheaper wood is always nice. On this specific build I was concerned about accurately mortising out the bed hardware on really long rails...came up with a simple jig and was glad I could play with it 1st in pine.

Haha, my kiddos playroom is outfitted with some nice modern Baltic birch chairs and bench now before I made them in walnut!

I like the weird angle thing...that's what attracted me to your design.  [big grin]

Thanks! Here's some other weird angle projects I've posted on here:https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/member-projects/my-1st-ever-chair-build/msg573261/#msg573261

Kiddo's have the plywood mockups of these in their playroom!
