King-size walnut bed frame

I built one king size bed similar to yours. I used z-clamps to attach the headboard to the vertical posts. I think on Rockler they are called table top fasteners. They hold with a lot of pressure but allow for wood movement.

It’s beautiful, love the headboard!

What did you use to finish?

Side note, my father made a couple beds(red oak) and the bed rail connectors are the same ones he used, thanks for the memory.

Matt

Thanks guys! I finished it with Odie's Oil...it was my 1st time using it and like how it turned out. I'm actually typing this laying in bed right now and the floating domino technique I used to attach the headboard has worked a treat! Cheers!

How thick was the stock used for the main headboard? Is it the same thickness as the side rails? (rough 5/4 -> 0.93" finished thickness)

How rigid is it? with a king size 76"+ width, I'm worried that there will be noticeable flex when leaning against the headboard

Somehow, I missed this one back a few years ago  [unsure]
Looks great though. Love the Walnut, but that design would look good in White Oak or Maple too, maybe some Hickory for something wild?

[member=62622]gearhound[/member] the bed looks great.

Hi All,

I'm making something very similar. However, instead of using solid walnut to make a panel, I ended up buying a 4x8 sheet of walnut ply.

I plan to make rails at the top and bottom of the headboard, but I'd like to get opinions on whether or not I should glue the ply in the middle. I was thinking about making a dado in the legs and gluing it in. On the other hand, I suppose I could let it float, as the rails are the structural component anyway.

Thoughts?

Confused on how you're doing the headboard? You're using a walnut ply panel for the midsection of the headboard and then solid walnut for a bottom and top rail? So is there a gap between the ply and solid walnut top piece?

Sorry for the delay in seeing this, haven't been on here much. The headboard is 20mm thick and there's no flex at all...it's incredibly rigid stacking pillows up against it to read at night.
