Was watching the Festool video on the Zobo forstner bits and saw them drilling out a hinge cup but a bit off of 90º. Seems this is the achilles heel of freehand drilling and the jigs available are pretty much crap. Even the General drill jig that has been around for years is now even more pathetic as the body is made from plastic and not steel anymore.
IF you were able to drill a 90º freehand that was AS GOOD as moving the material to a tool like a drill press this would seem to be something inline with the Festool philosophy of shop accurate field work.
I'm thinking something like a laser crosshair you have on a drill press but mountable to any Festool drill like a Red Dot sight. Maybe there should be a Picatinny type system built into the Festool line for "sighting" accessories that would enable you to get bench or shop tool accuracy with a hand held tool.
Specific scenarios...
- Freehand drilliing 35mm hinge cups
- Angle drilling holes for bannisters... Zobo demo I think
- Being able to "see" where your bit will exit when drilling in a pilot hole for a long fastener
- How about being able to dial in a specific hole to hole specification so that you could conceivably even drill 32mm shelf pin holes
While Festool drills have really focused on making a better drill, they haven't really changed the game in terms of accuracy. Brushless motors, killer trigger sensitivity, awesome torque...all great but accuracy to me is the holy grail in terms of freehand drilling.
