Almost finished with my laundry room remodel. Just need to paint trim and add shoe molding to baseboards. Remodel included new lights (ceiling LEDs and under cabinet LEDs), walls, flooring, trim work, and cabinets. The only thing I contracted were the quartz counters (Cambria brand, 3cm thick, and 8” back splash).
Build highlights include:
Shiplap
- 3/8” MDF, cut to width, grooved, and primed
- Used TS55, FS3000 rail, and Festool parallel guides. Found it easier to rip to width if I cut two sheets at a time with track saw vs. table saw (however, filled the bag on my Midi three times)
- Dropped dado stack on table saw to cut shiplap grooves
- Benjamin Moore primer and paint (white dove)
Cabinets
- Case, doors, drawer faces: ¾” Columbia PureBond MPX (formaldehyde-free) from a local shop here in San Diego (~$80/sheet). ¼” BB on drawer cabinet back and ½” on sink base – both set in dado. Added a few dominos to the sink base cabinet for extra strength. Otherwise, glue and mix of staples and screws to hold it all together.
- Drawers: ½” BB side and ¼” BB bottoms; Blum soft-close hinges and self-close under-mount slides; box joints (glue and a few 18g brads)
- Doors and Drawer faces: ripped maple into ¼” strips and attached as edge banding; front reveal is 1/8” and slight round over to create design; hardware is from Rejuvenation Hardware (to each his own, but not a fan of shaker or rail/stile type doors)
- Cabinets painted with Emtech EM6500 water based and color matched with BM’s White Dove. Interior is poly clear coat.
- Plywood cut down to rough sizes with TS55, track, and TSO rail square; final dimensions cut on Sawstop and hand-built sled for cross-cuts; iron-on edge banding.
Other
- I left water/waste in same location. Moved some electrical around.
- I was not looking forward to ripping out the prior tile floor (due to level of effort), but was surprised when I discovered that the old tile floor was installed over the homes original vinyl sheet floor. What I thought was going to be a painful couple days of hard labor ended up being a piece of cake. In 2 hours, I removed all the flooring from the laundry, hallway, and adjacent bath (including cleaning up). Even better, after sheet vinyl was pulled, I ended up with a clean and almost new looking slab to start my new tile install. My arms and back are so grateful that the prior owner was cheap and lazy.
- Check out the pic of the original garbage cabinets during demo (pic attached). These were the original cabinets installed on this house when built in 1998. At the time, this house originally sold for $390k (we bought 3 years ago for way more $$$) and this is the quality you got with your new home. Crazy! Absolutely amazed by the quality of construction of homes in San Diego vs. price. No offense, but it's like the large scale builders have figured out how to pinch every penny and maximize every penny of profit with the builds and materials used. Will be interesting to see what I find when I remodel my kitchen and family room later in the year.
