Logo Contest

Hi,

I think that all of the logos presented so far look good. I definitely think that there are logos here that look professional with out looking like a company site or an  advertising banner.  Based on the entries so far no matter what gets selected it will look nice.

Just my opinions of course. How about some thoughts from some of the other 2,000 + registered users?

Hi Brice,

On those gray ones . I seem to be drawn to the center one fade8. It looks like the difference in these is letter size and the amount of gray.  How about trying the center one with a little more gray?   I can picture these looking very nice with that thin green line running around the edge.

Seth

Seth, fade8 is favorite so far, I'll see if I can work on the changes in the morning.

OK, I've put a black border around the lettering to make it stand out a bit more, and altered the lighting slightly. The lighting changes have made the systainers look a bit better, but have also changed the background colour and made it a bit warmer - I don't know whether that's a good thing or not...

Obviously the rest of the logo needs to be done yet.

Everyone,
I just uploaded one of Andrew Ledbetter's logos to the test site.  Of course, since this logo has a white background, I changed the welcome text to black.

I'm trying to rotate through the entries as much as possible as we go along.  At some point in the next week or so, I will post a separate poll with all the logo entries so people can start voting.  For now, we can continue the open discussion on the individual logos, as well as the concepts for logos in general.

Keep checking the test site, as I am still tweaking little things.

How about a little more black, maybe shadow towards the left of the lettering?

And predictably, I like it.  Clean and crisp.

If the presence of the tool should for a moment confuse me and cause me to think it's a manufacturer's site, the large OWNER'S text gets me back on track.  :P

(image of stacks'o'Systainers with letters on them)

I think this may be a dead end.  The proportions of the Systainer images constrain the size of the letters and their spacing, and it just isn't working.

I would really like to see Systainer images used somewhere.  Possibly closed/open Systainers replacing the dimmed/bright F in the first column?

Ned,

I'm tempted to agree with you there. I think Joel K's original idea was a good one, but as you say the proportions make the lettering a bit on the small side. I do like the logo, but I must admit I like other suggestions better. I may carry on working on it yet - I know Joel is keen to experiment with the lighting/shadows etc to increase the contrast, even illuminating the letters themselves!

Ooh, blinding light emanating from within the Systainers, casting letter-shaped beams!

Kind of like Systainer jack-o-lanterns.

May as well have fun with it.

Joel K/JRB

Perhaps if you were just trying to put the letters FOG on Systainers, the size of the Systainers would allow better results.

Or you could use the lettered Systainers as initial letters for "Festool Owners Group".

Ned

(Who's still strongly in favor of Andrew's direction.)

I just uploaded the "fade8" logo to the test forum.  We have seen some different approaches by the contributors so far: ones with tools, without tools, reflective text, a series of related logos, and more.

The logo is sort of split between an upper (greenish) and lower (white) area.  Because the background needs to be a solid color (no way I could match the exact pattern in your logo) I had to choose either white or greenish for the area to the right of the logo.  Does that make sense?

Still trying to rotate through the contributions as much as possible.

Matthew,

Why don't you just move all the logos (full size) to a page or photo album where they can all be seen side by side & just number them.

I haven't done any more because it seems you are a little overwhelmed already  :)

I also think that if the contributors (me included) had some direction it would help.
i.e. tools - no tools - background - rotating series etc.

Scott

Scott,
I am putting together an organized list of the entries.  In the meantime, it's fine if things are a little messy and disorganized.  Sometimes, creativity works that way!
As far as direction, I'm open to logos with tools, without tools, and others.  I'm trying to judge based on the contributions.  Plus, I want members to vote for the ones they like best, without me biasing things.

Ned,

Interesting that you should mention Systainer jack-o-lanterns.
I had actually considered doing a version like that!
This last version won't be all that flashy though, it only has the slightly larger letters suspended in space in front of the Systainers with neon backlights behind each one illuminating the face of each Systainer with a nice Festool green glow.

I'll leave it up to JRB to decide how he wants to post his model.

Everyone,
I just uploaded another one of Scott W's logos, which falls into the "tools and text, dark background" category.  Obviously, I also changed the "welcome" text to white.
I also did a couple of other small tweaks.  can youi see what they are?
Check it out and tell me what you think.  Are we starting to see patterns we like yet?
Are there any other graphics people out there who want to contribute?

Everyone,
Couple of updates on logo designs...

  • I've heard from members with smaller monitors that the current logo size (1000x120) is a bit too large.  I tested this on a 15" monitor and confirmed that a smaller logo (800x96) might work better.  I resized the currently installed logo (contributed by Scott W) to show what the new size would look like.  However, by resizing the logo, some of the text and graphics don't look quite right.  I'd like to hear from everyone what you think of the new size -- is 800x96 better, or should we stick with 1000x120?  Jump into the test site to see what 800x96 looks like.  If 800x96 works better, I'll ask the logo contributors to re-submit their logos in the new size.
  • I created a poll so we can begin voting on the logos.  The poll includes all entries submitted so far.  Everyone, jump in and vote for your favorite!  Originally, I was planning to start the voting on 2/5/08, but we have enough entries to start early.  The poll will close on 2/8/08.  Click here for the logo poll.

Thanks,
Matthew

I looked at the logos submitted thus far, and I have a suggestion.  I wonder if we could see a logo similar to Scott W, 3 but with one tool (rotating with other tools???) in the area to the right of the logo.  Eliminate the tools that are in the logo text area and just show the tool to the right of the logo text.  Size the logo so that there is sufficient space for the tool and for the Welcome text area as well.  If I had the skill I'd do the logo myself, but...  Thanks.

  Hi,

So if people vote now before all the entries are in what do we do if something we like better comes along?  Or are you no longer accepting entries?

We'll just roll with it!
People can keep submitting logo entries, right until 2/8/08.  I'll add any new entries as they come in, and then people can vote on them.  You can always change your vote.

David,

Do you want something like this, only that the tool changes "rotates through a selection of tools" every time you log in or once a day, week, month etc.?

Is that what you mean?
