Makita RT0700 Router

Hi guys...

I recently purchased a Makita RT0700 router and something I can't figure out - it says it takes both 8mm and 6mm router bits but does it require a collet change? I didn't find another collet in the container.

Today, a 6mm bit kept slipping while I was routing - and you can imagine how annoying that can be. But, I started wondering if the default is an 8mm collet?

I miss my Festool router, which has always worked without any problems, but I'm a continent away and I can't lug all my tools back and forth...

RT0700 comes with a 1/4" collet, the 8mm is optional, I had to purchase one on eBay for my DRT50Z.

Correct, in the US it only came with the 1/4" (or 6mm).  You had to buy the 8mm as an accessory.  Is it possible where you are at the 8mm is the standard?  (I doubt it and I would think you would be able to turn the 1/4" bit by hand inside the router if you did have an 8mm collet)

A 6mm collet is slightly smaller than a 1/4” collet but a 1/4” bit will usually fit the 6mm collet with no problem.

In Europe it comes with both a 6 mm collet and an 8 mm one. At least in the metric parts of Europe.

It is possible to get bit slippage in this router as the bore is a bit too shallow. If the bit bottoms out, the collet won't grip properly. I have had to make a habit of always lifting the bit a bit when mounting it in order to avoid this.

I think I had both installed the bit improperly (to the bottom) and also spun it too fast (all the way). Noob mistakes...

I'm going to pick up the full suite of collets just in case.
