Marking & Measureing Systainer with kaizen

Here's a project I've been thinking about for awhile.

For years I've had my marking, measuring, and hand plane tools stored in a hanging (but portable) cabinet I thought was the right way to go at the time. The cabin hinges open like a box, but sideways, so I can get at everything. Here is a picture of it(emptied now). Marking and measuring on the left, hand planes on the right.

This worked OK in Denver, but most of the time I just left it open. Now that we're in earthquakeland, It was susceptible to having things fall out of it (note I used magnets in some locations to keep things tight) and also the spiders were having fun in there.

So I decided to see if I could get things into a systainer. For now I've had to give up on using 3D printing for custom inserts until the prices come down, so I used kaizen foam for more of a layered approach like what Festool does. The planes were moved into a re-organized roll around cabinet drawer (for now!) and this is the result of my efforts:

Rather than post a bunch of pics, here is a video of it being unpacked.

Marking and Measuring systainer

Now looking at it, it seems to me there is a business opportunity for somebody (hint hint, Woodpeckers) to sell a fully outfitted measuring systainer full of nicely anodized red metric tools...

pritty cool.
i love the bit with the squares. i wasnt sure when it would stop,

great use of space.

it is a pity that someone doesnt make a set of those kind of quality measurment and marking tools in a systainer.
the price would shock you but it would be worth it

What a great setup. You are really pushing me to try this Kaizen Foam out once and for all, this is a nicw way to keep all your marking and measuring tools around safe and secure.

Good idea with the layering. That aprox. 1/8" layers in the Kaizen make relatively easy to have varying depths of foam removed.

I really like the idea, but I think that foam is messy stuff and I don't like it. Inserts made along the lines of the Festool inserts are nicer, but one-offs are too expensive to produce and people will always have a different set of marking and measuring doodads.

The thing that "frustrates" me with the Centrotec installers set is the need to lift the trays out and put them "somewhere" to get at the stuff on the bottom. Similarly, taking big things out to get at the small thing I need isn't ideal. It ends up being like a picnic set ... you take everything out and spread it around.

I'm not leading to an answer here ... just refining the problem. I wish I had an answer! For me, leaving tools in wall cabinets and hanging on the wall would be ideal, but is a bad option too - not because of earth tremors, but because of nasty coastal air (it eats everything). I don't need to move mine from shop to site, etc so the big multi drawer rolling cabinets may be a good option.

I started out with wall pegboards.  That soon got messy as pegs would get pulled out with the tool.  Next step was to add some shelves, but wall space is at a minimum.  My wallspace is more of a problem than floor space.  I have thought of going to wall cabinets with space at back of cabs as well as tool space inside and out side of the doors.  By the time i can get bck into my shop to make cabs for my shop, i already have a huge list of Christmas problems to make for family & friends.  By the time Christmas has passed, I am buried in my list.  By time my list is half completed, i am back outside earning enough to get started on my next year's christmas list.

What has worked best for me is many Systainer drawers.  Mostly, i try to organize tham with tools for certain processes all in one systainer drawer set.  When i need a tool, i either bring the entire set of drawers to the bench, or just one drawer.

Of course, I am running out of space for all of those drawer sets. [dead horse]

I've got 2 x sort 12's and 4 x sort 6's - but none of them are suitable for tools. If I could get my hands on some of the Tanos systainers with the two large drawers at the bottom and three small drawers at the top I'd be happy!

Yes - Australia.

Sys4 Sort5 Tanos would weigh a bomb - it'll be interesting to see what they'd cost landed.

Thanks.
