Terminology for me is as below. I know that 'mil' is often used for .001" but I don't particularly like it. Three mil garbage bags come to mind. Being in precision machining in the US dictates working in both systems, so separating terminolgy is important.

.01mm= "10 microns"
1mm= "one millimeter"
1cm= "10 millimeters"
.001"= "one thou"
.0001"="one tenth"
.00001"= "10 millionths or 10 mils"

The two types I use almost exclusively nowadays are the Reflecta Meterex and the Hultafors Talmeter. They are very handy, both of them.
Previously I used the 3m (or 300cm/3000mm) Talmeter but Hultafors came out with an improved version where the 6m is pocketable and more sturdy so it is my go to Talmeter for daily use. The 3m is now VERY small and I have one in the shop.

If you are buying ONE Talmeter, get the 6m version. Solid and not too large. If you can get both, you should. There have been a dozen times per year where those extra meters come in handy and it is still pocketable. For small work the 3m is great.
The Reflecta Meterex was something I had to warm up to. After a few months use I really dig it. They are readily available at several dealers over here. Hope you guys get them!
