MFS 400 + FS KS

A while back, there was a long discussion about the FS ks angle unit.  I had figured out that the angle could be locked tight by adding a 5/16 flat washer.  that was fine.  the tool finally showed me a possibility to become usefull.  The only problem left was, where could i make it fit to become usefull as well as tight in adjustment.

I finally found my way clear to send a message to our good friend, Bob M. and today, my MFS 400 arrived via UPS.  I set it up and proceeded with some experimentation.

I found that it does, with care and a slight bit of finnegeling, set up perfectly square.  One does have to take care to get perfection, but the fussing is certainly within reasonable limits.  My first experiment was to make several thin strips about 3/16 thick.  Perfect repetition and i did not have to worry about chopping off my fingers as i do with the table saw (I don't mean i do chop off my fingers, i just worry about it) and there was no danger of kickback or just plain flying particles.  Each piece was as close to exact duplicate as my dubious skills were capable of accomplishing.  That in itself gave me promise that I would find many uses for the new toy.

I then started thinking about some other uses possible.  I had been thinking that the MFS might work more perfectly with my FS KS than other applications.  I dragged it out of its hiding lace and VOILA!!! It appears that it will work perfectly.  i don't have time for further detail, but I will definitely find out more about this combo very soon.

I did find one little problem drawback to the fix -- mine will no longer fit into its' Systainer unless I remove the plastic insert, and then it shifts around within...  IIRC, prior to the fix the knob needed to be tightened down to allow the Systainer's lid to close.  Maybe that has been the problem all along, the spring being depressed since packaged at the factory -- poor little guy didn't have a chance.    :(

I never had a systainer for it.  i keep it in a drawer and keep the knob loose.  like a bandsaw, it needs to be losened between uses.  I will be trying several different situations with it mounted to the MFS 400.  It works fine mounted to the MFT guide bar except I am limited to how wide an angle I can use.  With the angle guide (FS KS) mounted to the MFS 400, It seems I have a lot more potential.

sorry about all the letter confusion.  I don't know about the rest of you, but i have to refer to the catalogue nearly every time i try to describe a tool.  Other wise, the nomenclature can become quite inacurate, to say the least.  i have another festool angle guide thingee that got put into the same drwaer as above.  i do not recall what tool it came with and do not figure how to use it.  i have looked thru my 2007 catalogue, but cannot find it listed.  I will dig out te old ones and maybe i can decipher its use.  Once i find it, i will be able to further confuse by adding more letters of ID.  8)

Use the correct names, although it may be a bit confusing, it's surely more confusing if nobody knows what part you're talking about! I think everybody keeps the catalog handy at this point. I just google 'Festool' and the part designation if the book isn't close and usually get a picture.

The other day I came really close to buying a plastic orange saw guide by Benchdog (I think), because I haven't figured out (but haven't really tried) how I'm going to use the TS55 like I used my old style circ saw to trim the end of dimensional lumber. I used to slap the speed square down and run the base along the edge for a square trim. I'd love to have a really short piece of rail for this, maybe 400-600mm with an edge stop permanently attached to the underside at 90 degrees. Plunging to cut with no rail feels freaky to me. Is there a way to use the FS KS without a rail for this, i.e. to hold the TS55 square while cutting a 2x4? Does everybody else just use a speed square for this application?

Why don't you just use that Kapex you're always throwing in our NA faces.  ;D  No really I don't think the TS would be my first to use on dimensional lumber. Pick an "old style circ saw" for that job, maybe a used one.

the reason why i keep my old Milwaukee on hand for when i only need a couple of cuts to be made outside of my shop.

Serves me right, I knew you'd say that.  ::) ;D

I've got a cordless 24v Li-ion Rigid which is great, just wondering if anyone had done this with TS55 and FS KS, or a short chunk of rail.
