MFS ???

The only experiences i had with the USN was when they shipped me to that oriental land called Korea.  I took back all of my thoughts from that trip when they brought me back to good ol' USA.  And, BTW, I managed to spend some time on the end of a scraper on that homeward bound journey.  It was that, or KP.  I had gotten "volunteered" for 24 hour KP on my third day in the army.  i swore never to do another hour at that enjoyable task forever more.  all thru the next two years, i volunteered for many other "good deeds" rather than KP.  Of course, i loved to eat and always made good friends with the mess hall personell everywhere i went and never missed a meal, even if those wonderful C-rations was the fare.  Not even when i had a couple of wisdom teeth pulled. I did not miss the meal to follow.

Off topic, but i, also, have enjoyed this ride from you "Swabbies".  (not an unfriendly term from here)

Tinker,
As to KP, peeling potatoes was always the worst, except that we had an "automatic" peeler. A motor turned a barrel which had sharp mound on the inside. Sea water was pump through it to keep the peels draining. It took about 1 1/2 minutes for a barrel full. Unfortunately, it took 4 to 5 minutes to fully enjoy a smoke. We managed to get about 4 lbs of tiny potatoes out of a 25 lb bag,,,but all the eyes were gone and it was butt smooth. Even the cock roaches were swept overboard.

Eli - I wasn't complaining about the off-topic nature. I am the main off topikker.

About the smokes:  i have never smoked.  i remember police call, remember "...a--holes and elbows..."?  i got into all sorts of problems for often refusing to pick up cigarette butts on those excursions.  Later on, i got smart.  We got handouts of cigarettes which I alwayss accepted.  Those weeds provided great trading leverage.  i said above, I never missed a meal.  well, i traded butts for C-rations.  some C-rations were quite a bit more desirable than others and i would find all sorts of goodies that could be expanded on beyond the original few butts i had received.  I would stash the ones i liked the best for late nite snacks, the rest, somebody liked them somewhere. I just kept the trading going as long as possible. The ultimate goal, of course, would always be >>> MORE BEER!!!  Ah well, We all had our weaknesses  :P

I hope that wasnt SanMiguel beer without any preservatives. We would put 20 cases or so in a Mike boat and go one mile away from base and get wasted. No two beers ever tasted the same.

On board the DD, we woulld have "battle messing" once a month where we stayed at GQ and the mess passed out spam sandwiches. The monthly GQ messing was a requirement. Once everyone got fed, they would secure from GQ and go get the full meal.....just a little later.
