I am in the process of building out my shop, part of that is new workbenches. Ever since my lovely fiance bought me an MFT for my birthday, my build strategy has changed. I want to incorporate the MFT concept throughout my shop. Everything will be the same height as the MFT. With that said my first plan is to build a miter stand work bench for the wall. What I came up with is a suspended  torsion box top with integrated dog holes, and t-track for adjusting/moving the miter saw fence. The top is built on the 96mm hole increment MFT design. The bottom has openings to access any under table dog clamps/knobs.

Drawer openings will be 28" slides for double deep systainer drawers.

I still need to draw up the miter fence. Debating on the kreg or incra fence systems. There will be two of these benches, one on either side of the miter saw cabinet.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Nice work. I like this design a lot. I have been trying to think through something similar for my shop.  Still trying to work out the dimensions of the various components. I still can't decide between a torsion box on pedestals like your plan or a detachable Paulk-style torsion box resting directly on the cabinets. When I get around to drawing something up I will try to post.

Did you use Sketchup?

Are you planning to somehow support in and out of the mitre saw? If so perhaps you could have the top MFT style top be the same height as your miter saw on either side.

I used solid works. If you want a step model I can send you the part.

I went back and forth on a Paulk style design. I decided on this one based on simplicity and athstics. I did not want to have to template route everything and did not want to loose the 2" of space on either side of the cutouts since this is a more permanent solution. I do like the idea of making the top removable/ portable if needed.

As far as spacing everything is on the 96mm centers starting from the center out. It allows for 360 rotation of clamps in each of the holes. That's why they are in grids of nine. This also allows the dogs be used to make a variety of angles. Only ones that won't rotate fully are the last ones on either side. This is due to the length of wall it's going into.

Yes there will be one on either side of my miter saw. The miter saw will be on a separate cabinet and the miter saw cut surface will be at the same height as these benches and my mft. I want to be able to use these benches as a right side support for the mft on long boards.

I agree, nice work.  I'm thinking through a similar design and also like in the Cinci area.  I have a miter saw stand that I'm replacing and want to use the MFT concept for the main stand.

Will the separate stand for your miter saw be stationary or mobile?

An idea on the fence - how about a fence that has two pegs/pipes/whatever that fit's the holes? This way you can place the fence down, and when you need to work on the workbenches, all you do is slide the fence up?

Looking good -- can't wait to see the finished product.  I assume you've seen the [member=11196]Peter Parfitt[/member] video on the ultimate miter saw stand, where he incorporates the Incra fence?
