More CMS modules in the US!

The CMS is already compelling as a precision, near dust-free portable router table.  It'd be a *must have* (for my work at least) if more modules were made available in the US!  In particular, I'd love to have the jigsaw insert in order to scribe trim.  Though fast and fairly accurate, free-handing on my portable tablesaw just isn't safe enough.  (In the interim, I might try the RAS--seems like it might be too dusty and slow-going, though...)

I hope you are not holding your breath (said jokingly).  My bet is that Festool would love to be able to offer more here, but they have announced that none are coming in certainly at least the near future.

The RAS scribes trim well.  The dust collection capabilities improve with practice and quite a few here use it for scribing including myself.  You can always give it that thirty day trial run!

At least the jigsaw insert is a nice "luggage size" piece [big grin]

... in all honesty I can imagine professionals holding back and also realise Festool US need to be very careful - but unless some market differentiating modifications have been made, the jigsaw and plunge saw inserts from overseas will be 100% compatible. There may be legal and safety issues I'm not aware of though!

As Kev mentioned, there are some implications of using different modules not released by Festool USA:

Forum Moderator Note

Warning: The Festool CMS System is approved for use with only the OF 1400 and OF 1010 routers in the US and Canadian markets.  It is not approved for use with the OF 2200, nor with any of the CMS modules currently available outside the US and Canadian markets (TS, Jigsaw and sanding modules).  Festool USA does not  endorse the use of these components and will not support them with spare  parts or repairs. The use of anything other than the OF 1400 and OF 1010 routers and their related accessories with the CMS will void the warranty agreement on the entire system for customers within the US and Canada. Festool does not endorse the application or use of any Festool product in any way other than in the manner described in the Festool Instruction Manual. To reduce the risk of serious injury and/or damage to your Festool product, always read, understand and follow all warnings and instructions in your Festool product's Instruction Manual.

In spite of all these warnings to cover their potential liability, I expect that we will eventaully see a source for these other CMS inserts in North America.  Someone will probably bring a bunch of them over and sell them on something like EBay.

Until, such a source become available, I will not consider the purchase of a CMS.

The demonstration that I saw in person scribing with the RAS limited the dust to the work table area mostly straight down on the floor beneath the work piece, and over all the DC was  good.  It is also quite fast, the RAS takes material off at a high rate.

Frank,

I believe that CMS modules have already made there way across the pond.

You just have to ask the right people [wink]

I expect that is true and I expect that I will eventually find the right people.

Oh no!  I didn't realize it'd been announced that they weren't coming.

I guess I'll have to bide my time and try out the RAS.  If it can easily handle removing about 1/4" of material, then it'd most likely suit my needs...

Time to search youtube!

It will remove 1/4" of material without blinking.  You have thirty days to try it so I figure you could probably scribe a dumpster full of dust in that time.  [jawdrop]

If you try it and decide to keep it, get the hard pad for it.  It makes scribing even better.  Accessories are not returnable in the thirty day period unless that is the policy of the dealer.  I don't think that you will be taking it back though.

It wasn't announced that they aren't coming. However, there are no immediate plans to make any other modules available. Whether that will change in the future, not sure. UL approval is the key to getting tools in the US/Canada. Have any friends at UL?  [huh]

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the hold up is some revised modules ... A snap in approach for the OF2200 and CARVEX would make sense and I'd happily buy a saw module that wasn't a converted track saw.

UPDATE:

After watching this video (of the RAS making quick work of *plywood*):

and having taken on a few jobs in quick succession where an RAS would have come in *mighty* handy, I ordered a new RAS through my local Festool dealer.  I still look forward to the possibility that the CMS jigsaw module might become available in North America, (I only *wish* I had friends at the UL, Shane!  [big grin]), but I also think that the RAS is going to occupy a key spot in my kit.  I can't wait to put it to work!
