Multi-JetStream Pads & Disks

I bought some sanding disks a couple of days ago, and when they arrived yesterday they were the new type. This prompted me to look at the  Multi-JetStream Brochure in more detail, and I noticed something which seemed a bit unexpected. On the pads, there is a third ring of 16 smaller holes (see red arrow below):

These holes are shown in the brochure as being 'intake air channels', along with the large centre hole. The thing is, these 16 holes are not present on the sanding disks, so presumably when a disk is fitted, no air can get into these holes. How does that work?

Also, on the new disks the centre hole is far smaller than it used to be. Is this to restrict the amount of air going into the centre?

I'm not saying by any means that I think it's wrong, I know Festool would get it perfect, but it just seems a bit odd to me.
 
Jonny, I asked the same question a while ago and Shane told me they were for cooling the pad. Even though there are no holes in the sanding paper, the holes in the pad are connected to its internal air ducts and thus help dissipate heat.
 
Here's a guess, the 16 small holes pull air through the air space in the hook and loop of the pad and disc helping to keep them cool.
