[attachimg=5][attachimg=4][attachimg=3][attachimg=2][attachimg=1]Hi all, I is have 7 routers a single speed Bosch 1617 fixed base/plunge kit, a single speed Bosch 1611 14 amp plunge and Bosch 1615 Evs plunge(1611 and 1615 both NOS bought for a song on eBay) a Bosch d handle 1618evs, a Bosch colt ( the newer one). And a Milwaukee 5625-20 in a bench dog router table. And now a festool plunge. I was going to buy the plunge base for the colt but then spied the 1010 at Paul b Zimmerman hardware . It was a older model that was $420 regular price $485. I wish festool would include edge guide which was a extra $48. 1010 comes with a dust catcher for edge work and a parallel guide for rail systems. I bought the festool for small projects like the box drums pictured. Some pics of my modest shop . downstairs in basement . Pics show where chips jam when no dust collection used. I bought a adapter on eBay to use my wap vac with it. I router some 45 chamfers on my deck with the 1010. The bit wouldn’t even fit the Bosch colt. Only uses 1/4 and 8mm shanks but I bought it for compact handling for small projects. The big 2200 festool doesn’t interest me cause I got big Bosch plungers. The 1400 doesn’t interest me cause I got the Bosch 1617 kit. Wanted to try a festool and I really like using routers. But I’m not drinking the kool aid and going all festool. I do like how lightweight and maneuverable the 1010 is. Plus I like using two hands to router. I m not sure how I feel about palm routing with colt . It was expensive but is a well built balanced tool

I wish the collet was all nut. The Festool collet has just a small hex to wrench on at top and rest of collet is smooth. I like more area to put my wrench on. Not much room to maneuver wrench between plunge posts. Wrench is a high quality wrench. I wish router had a electric brake like the big makita plunge router does. Plunge is very smooth. The twist lock knob to lock plunge in position is nice feature .

You do know there's a shaft lock, right? I love the shaft lock/single wrench bit changes.

Yep it’s a hole in the spindle and when you line it up and push button it locks it.
you should see the antiqued spindle lock on those big Bosch plungers(1611,1615)  I have .

And to add to my review the Festool ran fairly cool despite making a full profile cut in pressure treated lumber with a fairly large 45 chamfer bit. I had it on speed 4. The top at the vents was pretty warm. The collet wasn’t hot removing bit. The Bosch  colt gets hot just running without a load on it. Collet is hot to the touch after 5 minutes of running.

The 1010 is my favorite Festool router and I own all 4 of the Festool variants. I also own a couple of Milwaukee routers and the 1010 is still my favorite.

On the latest 1010, Festool moved a few things around so that you have more wrench room.

I posted cause I was interested in some discussion on Festool. Is it the best handling router I ever used? Yes. Is it head and shoulders better than a Bosch . No. . It’s not like upgrading from a ski or ryobi to a Bosch . It’s the law of diminishing returns. You get maybe 25% better performance for 3 times plus the price and them to add salt the wound you have to buy your own fence. You have 30 days to try and you can return . I will keep it and enjoy it. Especially since because of its size nimbleness it will be my most used router aside from the big Milwaukee 5625-20 in the table. Plus it’s the least expensive Festool router. I would never buy the big 2200 for $995. I got a brand new USA made Bosch 1615 Evs new old stock for $120 some odd dollars on eBay. Now granted just as much as I think 3/4 ton diesel trucks are neat I’m not buying one. The 2200 is way overkill. The 1010 can and will be used a alot. However, it will probably be my only Festool . A curiosity I’m my arsenal of tools. Always wanted to own at least one Festool.  The  trion jigsaws aren’t exorbitantly priced .  Neither is the multi tool. Who knows maybe I’ll bite the bulleti on another Festool

. Thanks for your opinion, I was on the fence about buying it cause it only uses 1/4 and 8 mm collets I even have a 1/4 roundover with a 1/2 shank.  I bought a Freud 1/4 inch router bit set for the Bosch colt. Then I figured  I’d try it since I have the 1/4 bits now.  Maybe I should find a nice 8mm set of bits

I want to use this router in my little basement shop where the dust collection and quiet ( compared to other routers) will be beneficial.  I plan on practicing on scrap wood to really get to know the machine. A lot of my older projects I just dove right in which resulted in errors and frustration.

When all my routers were Milwaukee, I purchased a set of Bosch roundover bits with 1/2" shanks. Even the 1/16" & 1/8" radius bits have 1/2" shanks which can be kind of clunky but if that's all you know you just live with it.

When I picked up the 1010 I also picked up a Festool 1 mm & a 1.5 mm radius roundover bits with a 8 mm shaft. The smaller diameter shafts are really nice to work with.

Anxious to try the adapter for the 1010 dust port. It needs made yet. Guy on eBay makes them on 3D printer . Hoping it doesn’t clog. It clogged router deck but then there was no vacuum attached . The Bosch 1617 dust collection with round ports works fine. Here’s a link to the adapter. I can force the round rubber adapter for my WAP vacuum on but then it falls off.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Festool-Cl...=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

Got my fence via fed ex fro hartville tools in Ohio. Annoyed that dust cup and micro adjuster is separate to buy. But hey I got another set of rods. Fence sits in case nicely .

That is a very good move. I got a few 8mm shank bits when I first got a MFK700, but it is a fairly specialty tool. But when I got my hands on a OF1010, it became a priority for me. In the US, that's not the easiest thing. Unless you have a pretty good woodworking store locally, you're not going to find them in a retail situation. In-line is your friend in this case.
Lee Valley has them for a lot of profiles in the small to medium range, available individually. Bosch also has a nice set, but I have only found it through Amazon UK. Then it shipped from Germany.

Took a scrap piece of cedar and used a 1/4 mortising bit and made a 3/4 inch dado in 2 passes. Dado filled with chips but moved router back over it and vacuum sucked chips out. Rest of passes nothing was left in dado. Then used a 3/8 roundover without chip defector and there was minimal debris .
