My New Workshop

Hi Everyone

We are moving house and have the misfortune (some could call it luxury) of not selling the old house first. It does mean that I can create the new workshop before moving all the major items of kit (optimist) but it also means that cash is very tight (reality) but then the old place might sell before I can create the new workshop (pessimist).

The old workshop was approximately 5 m x 10 m but with a very useful space above with bags of storage space. The new workshop started out as a double garage at almost the same footprint but with very little space above.

I am trying to capture the key elements of the move and transformation (garage to workshop) in a series of videos which I would like to share. I have made 2 videos so far and expect to make 2 or 3 more.

Please forgive me if I am slow to respond to comments or messages as I have a huge amount of work (not just the workshop) to do.

Glad you’re making progress with the new place Peter, it must be a very stressful time for you I’m sure.

Hi Steve,

I had plenty of time to do the planning for the new workshop but I did not appreciate how uneven the floor was. My "mobile workshop" concept, with key equipment on castors, would not have worked. I then agonised about solving the problem and, in a sense, the flood came at the right time as it forced me towards the current solution.

I will do my best to keep the pace going but have to do quite a few other jobs at the new house.

When I set up my UK shop it was of course in a rental. So I was limited in what I could do.

But the 2 take aways ,  the most help ful was insulating the floor to be able of handle the Brittish winter cold.

I used rigid foam insulation for that and went over it with Chip board. I could of secured it better but it was a rental.  What i was planning was cutting channels in the foam to run my cables for the CT and other tool to where the tools would be set up so I wouldnt be tripping or stepping on them..

Like you did I drywalled the ceiling joint to help with keeping the heat in the shop in the winter.
Spur shelving was very useful and utilized every bit of space that I could place storage cabinets. Under MFTs etc.

Maybe get a insulation kit for your garage door keep the cold out better.
Looks like you thought your shop out nicely.

For lighting I added 2ea 4 ft fluorescent lights with 2 bulbs ea. You could have 4 ea which I think wuold have been better.

As I said you sorted your shop nicely. Im sure it will be a awesome shop for you and looking fwd to seeing the finished product

Hi Ron

Many thanks for this. The whole place is now very well insulated albeit the garage doors need a little more attention. The sound proofing is superb although the garage doors, again, have to be done. Luckily both garage doors have insulation built in but I need to add sound proofing and improve that insulation a bit.

I now have 9 LED lights in the main part of the workshop and 3 more in the smaller section. They are all 4000K, 5600 Lumen and the place is really nice to work in.

I am continuing with the flooring and hope to have that complete within 7 days although other commitments may make that later.

    I know it's a bit late by now, but the RAS does a wonderful job of abrading off paint, caulk and substances other than concrete from concrete slabs.  [smile]

Hi Willy,

I could not afford one and tried to borrow a Renofix diamond grinder but with no success. By then so many people said battens and chipboard flooring that it became the method of choice.

I've been enjoying the series having been through a full build myself in the last year and a half! It's slow-going as we have now had two kids while I build it out but it's working well enough! I'll try to post a journal thread soon to document the slow evolution of it!
