My RS2 Observations

Thanks, I've been getting ready to pull the trigger on a new set of sanders, and this review has helped me to decide to add the RS2.  I have a bit of flatwork looming on my horizon.

Dan when we get together you can try out mine no problem. I have a brand new virgin ready to be broken in.

Nickao,

Very cool, I will definitely take you up on that.  I haven't forgotten about the other stuff, just got bogged down with other chores.  I'll send a note soon.

Hi,

Thanks for the good review.  And nice pics.  Seems like  lots of people are looking for info on this sander lately, including me.  Be sure to update as you learn more.  Also it is great that you have included usage tips in the review (how to move the sander). THis type of thing can be very useful for new users.

Thanks so much.  That was a really good review!  It answered the technical questions I've continued to have about the sander, and I especially liked the "balanced" attitude that doesn't gloss over the "challenging" aspects of the tool.

Regards,

John

I'd like to add a few comments. First, don't underestimate the importance of the vac in producing good results, not just with this sander but, with all sanders. I would highly recommend a Festool vacs to be used with their sanders. Finding the right speed for the sander and suction for the vac can make a big difference in the finished product. Orbital sanders do require a bit more focus, I find keeping them moving at all times in long passes with grain helps reduce the chances of swirl marks. As Underused pointed out you really do have to be careful taking the off the work (while it is running). His comment about "the sander not doing all the work" is great. I sometimes think people believe sanding is a job that doesn't require any skill or knowledge, that is just plain wrong! There is real skill involved, learning this skill takes some time. Sanding is the first step to getting a high quality finish and its an important one that is often overlooked.

Festool's sanders are some of the best money can buy, but as Underused said, you need to do the work. Nice review.

underused,

Very well-written, balanced, and informative review.

I just bought a RS2E but haven't tried it yet. I found your comment about the Festool abrasives interesting because I have experienced the same phenomena, especially with the coarser grit Rubin discs (Rotex 150). I have never been able to use one to the point where it looks "worn out" as with other abrasives; but it indeed does stop cutting effectively while looking nearly new.

Where can I get the abrasives you mentioned via web or mail order? Have you used any Norton 3X abrasives? Before I got my Rotex i thought the Norton was the best I had used (Dewalt 1/4 sheet sander) and up to 400 grit for wet-sanding pre-catalyzed conversion lacquer on bar tops etc.

Thanks for a good review.

I am not in the market for an orbital sander -but, if I were, I would certainly be influenced by your review.

Thanks for the great review.  That is one of the toolos on my list and this makes me confident that I'm making the correct purchase.

HI,

That is interesting about the Festool abrasives.  I also find that it almost never looks worn out.  But even when changing the abrasive due to it not cutting as opposed to looking worn out,  It still lasts 2-3 times longer than the Mirka Gold I had been using.

Also interesting that the RS2  sands faster than a 150 ROS. Is the ROS that you are comparing to one of the Festool ETS150s?  I have the ETS150/5. I don't have the RS2.

Seth

HI,

My thinking was that even though the 1/2 sheet is larger than the 150 (6") round , that the ROS /5  or /3 is a more aggresive sander and would make up the difference in the actual  time spent.  Not having used the RS2 I really can't say though.
Not knocking the RS2 , it certainly has its place and if the updated version ever reaches the NA market I will probably add it to my list.

If you look at the model available in the UK it has the plug it cord, not sure what other updates it has.

Hello,
Yeah, what happened here?  Did we lose a review?
Thanks,

Matthew,

I actually noticed that the other day, when I believe DD was looking for a members name from Japan.

When I went poking around,(because I had remembered that underused had a starwars empire outfit up for a picture) his photo was gone & so was his content.

So I figured he bailed and took his content with him. If you look at the date he originally posted his posts compared to the last time he logged in, there is a consistency to the pull out

times. Didn't think much of it at the time. Now if there is other content from other members missing, then I would be concerned. What's the equivalent of an cyber gopher?
