Hi I have an Eames bent plywood table that I left my laptop on. Big mistake: it left a burn mark on the surface.

Does anyone have ideas how I could get the mark out? Not sure if it's possible.

Thanks!

Is this an antique?  A genuine Eames product?

Does it have shellac for the final finish?  If so, sometimes you can “erase” marks by taking a rag and wetting it with shellac and waiting until the shellac feels merely “damp”.

Then rub it over the offending mark.

If the original finish was shellac, then the new shellac will cause it to soften and allow you to blend the old shellac and the new.

As far as I know, this only works with shellac.

It definitely will not work with poly or acrylic finishes.

I don’t know about lacquer.

Good luck with this.  Wait for other replies in case my suggestion is made out to be a bad idea.

Addendum:  I just went to the Herman Miller site and they don’t call out the finish.  So, a mystery.  Someone else was restoring an Eames table and they tested it with both alcohol (a test for shellac) and lacquer thinner ( a test for lacquer) and the finish was unaffected by either.  So I am stumped.  I would not expect poly or acrylic on a Eames product.

I suppose this depends on what you are calling a burn. Did it discolor the wood? or is this just damage to the finish?
