Makes $3.80 per gallon US and 20 mpg US not look horrible. Even if you guys can get 30-40 mpg...still more than we are paying per mile.

Kev, you got that right! I would love 40 mpg and I don't know anyone here that would not buy the 40 mpg vehicle if we had them here! All I can think is that Big Oil likes Auto companies that make low MPG vehicles.

At the risk of straying into "forbidden post" territory there may well be another element here. In the UK and Europe about 75% of the cost of fuel is tax, so the "need" for more efficient engines is acute or most people couldnt afford to drive.
On your side of the pond the taxation level is a lot lower, but you burn more, so the more tax is obtained, etc, etc.
As you cannot avoid the levy as it is at the pump, the incidents of fuel thefts from vehicles is very high over here.
