Need Input please

Ten Fingers,

I usually try to avoid posting to allow the FOG to remain independent, but I saw your post and thought it would be helpful to add a few comments from my own experience building similar projects.  I don't know what other tools you might own, so please keep that in mind when reading my recommendations.  While I would consider tool categories outside of this list, I will keep my comments focused on only those items that you listed.

I've been more of a lurker than a contributor for several months, mainly because the only Festool's I've ever touched are at my local woodworking shop. However, like Nestea, I'm ready to take the plunge.

I do have some experience with woodworking, but am by no means am a professional. Sadly, I have a whole shop of equipment, however, I have no shop. Given the economy, and the need to fund more important things, like my children's college funds, retirement, etc.... realistically, it'll be 2 more years before construction can begin (hopefully, commodity prices will still be low).  In the meantime, I miss cutting wood, and need a home office and areas of storage, so I figure I can do it myself. It won't be high-high end stuff, but mainly plywood cabinet based furniture / entertainment centers / bookcases etc...

I wish to build my 5 year old daughter a similar desk for Christmas as well

I have a picture of my booklist but am waiting for me gallery. Here's links to 2 of them

Hopefully, you get the idea of my intentions.

Here's my shopping list:

452921  Handle for CT 22/33 Dust Extractors                                  1      $70.00
456736 Compact Cleaning Set                                                      1 $68.00
482107 Guide Rail Connector                                                         2 $28.00
491621 Festool 1080mm (42.5") Guide Rail for Drilling Holes         1 $76.50 I would get the longer rail...if you are making tall bookcases.  Mine were 78" tall, so the longer rail came in handy.  The other option is to go with 2 of these, which might save you a little money vs one long rail
492753 Boom Arm For Dust Extractor Handle                                 1 $240.00 This is good if your extractor is going to stay in one place.  If you plan on moving it around the shop...it is a bit laborious as the legs will need to be adjusted each time you want to move it.  A couple of options to consider.  mount the boom arm to a stud (if you have one...I'm thinking of doing this) or get a smaller CT MIDI to move around the shop or out of the shop area when needed.
571540 Festool ETS 150/3 EQ Random Orbit Sander                         1 $275.00 I am assuming you chose this, because of the 6" pad...an alternative would be to purchase the DTS 400 instead...this is a great sander, which will allow you to get into corners, as well as sanding flat surfaces...The Rotex can handle anything else, and the only benefit of the ETS 150 is the smaller footprint for tight spaces...but the DTS 400 is smaller and lighter, but gives great results and additional versatility
571594 Festool Rotex 150 FEQ Dual Mode Sander                         1 $475.00
574283 Festool Domino DF 500-Plus Set with Trim and Cross Stop 1 $800.00 You can get the domino with a nice SIPO assortment pack of dominos if your store purchased the promo item that ran on Sept. 15th...ask them...they might still be able to get them...SIPO are mahogany dominos and can be used for both indoor or outdoor applications.
583291 Festool LR 32-SYS Hole Boring System For OF 1010 & 1400 1 $406.00
493296 Beech Dominos for Indoor Applications                            1 $69.00
M0079 Festool Promotion MFT Clamp Set                                         1 $180.00
P2574267 Package, OF 1400 EQ and CT 22 E HEPA Dust Extractor 1 $891.00 might consider an additional 36mm hose (27mm is fine for sanding and TS, but I really like the extra suction of the 36mm for routing and cleanup.
PT3561174 Package, TS 55 and MFT 3 Table                                 1 $992.50 At some point, you might consider an additional MFT/3 Basic...I actually use three to make up a huge work surface, but two work to support large work pieces...sort of like sawhorses on steroids.

Does anyone see any glaring vacancies or redundancies?

The store where I will purchase this is only open till noon on Saturdays and closes at 5 each weekday so it's nearly impossible for me to get there so I would rather do it all in one swoop.

I also need to setup , e.g. make, a router table and was thinking of using the woodpecker's router lift, and making the table/cart myself. Good idea / bad idea?

Anyway, thanks everyone in advance for any comments / suggestions

My opinion, I would keep the 150/3 on your list without hesitation and maybe add the dx93 for inside corners...  The 150/3 is absolutely in a class by itelf even among festools....The boom arm is nice but could wait... you can still use everything without it... and I'd wait in the shop sweeping kits...a broom works fine... Altough I would get one 36mm hose...

I dont travel with my tools so I bought the long rail (108 inch I believe) to avoid the connector inconvenience...and The shelf pin equipment is nice but pretty expensive... if you don't use it all the time to build cabinets on a daily basis, there are a lot of less expensive options that work great.  In a production shop it might be different.  As for the domino, I'd definately get the package with Dominos and cutters.

just my opinion...

That's a nice set up, Ten...

I'm just going to jump in about the hoses/cleaning situation.

If you want to cover small dust, big chips, AND clean up, a good way to start is with the Festool 454769 - Universal Cleaning Set. You get the 36 mm hose, though anti-static, and the cleaning equipment you need to quickly clean up what little mess is left after a job in the middle of a living room (or bedroom).

One thing that isn't talked about much is that the end of the Festool hose is rubberized and leaves black marks on the workpiece if you rub against it. When you have a proper Cleaning Set, you don't mark the surfaces you are trying to clean, therefore saving additional clean-up time.

Also, you should consider where you are going to use the cleaning tools and who else might be using them.

If you could drop a metal object and damage something, the non-metallic tools are probably better. They are quite durable, unlike the kind you'd normally see at a big-box store.

'Just some food for thought,

Tom

I concur. The 150/3 is my go-to sander 90+% of the time. It is easy to use one-handed (something I cannot do comfortably with my Rotex) and has very, very low vibration. While I love my Rotex, I keep it as a specialty tool for when it's unique features bring an edge to the job.

I want to thank everyone for their input.

This morning I was able to purchase a mini festool shop. Unfortunately, I had to be called into work for an emergency (which is where i am posting from) so hopefully, I'll be freed up by 5pm so I can get them.

MFT3 and TS55
OF1400 and CT22
handle for CT22
LR32 hole kit
42" hole rail guide
Domino kit
Dominos
ETS 150/3

I will probably get the long guide rail for ripping plywood as well, but this is a start. An expensive start.

I hope to be able to drive 20 miles from work to get to a lumber yard as well and pick up some plywood, rather than get the plywood from the big box stores.

Hopefully, will be able to post pics of work later this weekend.

Everyone's input appreciated and I hope to contribute knowledge and advice in the future

Martin -

Looks like you made some good choices.  I wish you good luck with your new acquisitions.  One word if I may...

Don't rush things.  Take your time.  Learn to use them in the way they were intended to get the most out of them.  Most of all, use them safely.

If you have the Rotex 150 sander, I think that you do not absolutely need the Festool ETS 150/3 EQ .  Rather, I would be inclined to purchase the LS 130 EQ as my second Festool sander.

Frank,  Can you expand on why you like the LS130 sander so much?  Inquiring minds want to know.
