Are the new 18V compact 2.6aH batteries backwards compatible with a C12  PC1213S?

No, they are not. You can never use higher voltage batteries in a lower voltage tool.

The batteries are keyed so you will not be able to insert a wrong battery in the wrong tool.

Are there new generation of batteries compatible with these old C12s?  If so, can you tell me their price?

Brice, I'd be really surprised if anyone even has any of the NiCads left in stock. They've been discontinued for quite a while, primarily because of environmental laws in Europe prohibiting them, as I understand.
