Does anybody know when these new units will be hitting stores and replacing old inventory? I need to know how much time I have!!  ???

You know, I thought it was going to be a little while before the new Domino makes its way to the US, but don't quote me on that. Maybe someone at Festool can give you the definitive answer.

Other than here on the FOG, I have not heard anything about this.

Hope to find out soon.

Bob

Hi all,

If someone at Festool could give us a response it would be great.

I looked at the Belgium site and i found a pic with the plastic pieces.

I'll contact Festool soon to (perharps) get an answer about this.

Hope i will also found the old version wich looks bettered designed.

For all of you sitting on the fence for a Domino get one now or forever hold your peace!!!

Hope I never drop my Domino and destroy the fence.

From my experience Festool doesn't make crap so I am sure the new plastic stops do their job well.

They may not need to change the design in the US because the patents are not good here.  Although I can't imagine that Festool would make different models.  Thast would be a bonus for us in NA.

Don, from the conversation in Henderson, the new Domino will be coming to the US.

hi all,

I got news from belgium.

So the Domino was modified due to an existing patent.

I've heard about Lamello but i think it is a Maffel patent.

So call ASAP your provider and ask him if he got also some "old" domino.
It's what i did and ... I'm a lucky man cause I found one !  ;D

Have a nice sunny day (from Belgium)

Incidentally, there's a side-by-side review of the Domino and the Mafell DD40 Duo-Doweller in Good Woodworking for January 2008, and the pages relating to the Domino are athttp://www.festool.co.uk/images/download_press/domino_2008-01_gw_88-89.pdf   The review mentions how the Domino "like the Mafell, has a pair of sprung referencing pins, meaning that you can work from an edge, and make a joint without the need for setting out".

I found the other half of this review tonight - ie the the two preceding pages devoted to the Duo-Doweller. For the sake of completeness, it is athttp://www.dm-tools.co.uk/reviews/MafellDD40.pdf and the sprung pins can be seen in the photos.

I cannot understand why Festool have changed the pin design. Do Mafell have a patent on the wheel or what??? How on earth a huge company like Festool cannot defend something like that is not good enough. I am glad I have my domino with the metal index pins, as I would definitely not have bought it with those pathetic plastic stops.

Other than that, I absolutely love the machine....we need definitive answers.

Well I guess I will be different here, but I never use the pins. I do all my work with pencil marks. The pins for me only get in the way for the jobs I am doing. Most of the time I use the dominos for alignment, yes they hold joints very strong.

Funny thing is that I actually took a good look at the machine when I got it to see if the pins could be removed.

I may have to spring for a second unit...

Ted, the Domino still has registration pins, they have been redesigned however.

Matrix, patents exist to protect one's unique designs, Festool copied the design too closely and had to stop producing the Domino with it's older pin design. I'm Festool's legal team looked into this situation very carefully and come to the decision to redesign the Domino. Legal battles are very costly, in some places in the world the "loser" is responsible for paying for the "winner's" legal fees. If Festool lost the case they may well have had to pay a royalty fee to Mafell for all the Dominos sold with the old pin design. Same with an agreement with Mafell to use their pin design, the royalties for both the new Dominos and the old could have been just too expensive.

Brice, The new plastic pins lock a bit wider than the steel pins?

I will have to check a new unit to see if they could be removed...

From my conversation with Christian O. sounded like the new Dominos weren't going to make their way to the States for awhile.

First thing I heard about the design change was by forum member Johne: link to thread
When I read it, I checked the Dutch festool site and they had changed the product picture to the new version allready by then.

I think the new tabs are easily removed, because I think the people at festool foresee wear of the plastic pieces and ship a pair of replacements with the tool. The thread in the link shows pictures.
