New Header Images

For everyone to see, I am attaching Frank's template, which contains a photo of him working with a Festool sander.  Let's work out the size needed for photos to fit into the template, then we can open it up to other contributions.

Actually Matthew I sent you a template exactly the size that you requested with no image at all in it:

[attachimg=#1]

I also sent you an example where the template is filled with my picture and that's the one that you included in your message.

As to the size, the picture of me that I was able to insert into the template was 424 pixels wide by 116 pixels high.  I suggest that pictures should be no larger than that.

Frank,
Thanks for the effort on this!  I really appreciate it.

Yes, I was talking about the size of the photo that goes into the header.

We have one new photo -- Frank working hard with a Festool sander.

Now, let's open this up to everyone else.  Submit photos of yourself using a Festool tool, you in your shop, you with your pets, all of the above, or something totally different.

Submit your photos 424 pixels wide by 116 pixels high.  I'll then place them into the header template Frank provided, and we'll be all ready for a new look.

Thanks again,
Matthew

Good Morning,
Thank you to Frank, Neil, and Nickao for providing photos!  I think this effort will allow me to take a challenge and in the end make the forum better.

Anyone else want to contribute photos?  Please go right ahead!

Thanks,
Matthew

so if festool owns this site how is it they do not want there tools to show up? and how is it confusing to people.  people that come to this site and see the photos might say oh let me check out that tool I saw the picture of and maybe , just maybe buy one.

since they took over, they just keep on nitpicking away.  as the beatles once said 20 million times......... "Let It be"

Here are three more.  This time without me in the picture (which can only be a good thing)

2: [attachimg=#2]

3: [attachimg=#3]

Regarding the reasons Festool requested that I remove the photos: I really did not pursue it with them.  This forum must have a friendly connection with the company, but also remain independent.  That means that in situations like this I actually don't want to know too much about internal, corporate reasoning.  They requested that I remove the photos and they said it is confusing people.  I took that as good enough to make the change.

Matthew,

The only thing stranger than Festool's request is your decision not to ask why ?
How do you know that the next set of photographs will not upset them too ?
None of this makes any sense to me.

Everyone,
A lot of people (and I mean a lot) have written to me asking what's going on with this.  People want to know why we have to replace the header images, and how those images are confusing people.  My answer is, I really don't know.  Festool has requested that I replace the images, and so I am working on it.  In the end, I see it as an opportunity rather than a problem.

However, I understand people's need for an answer, so I have written to Festool for an explanation.

In the meantime, let's get some more images from people!

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Kreg, you know Festool doesn't own this site, now you're adding to any confusion that may be out there. There could be new members to this site and after reading comments like yours and seeing Festool's pictures in the header believe it is owned or controlled by Festool. As for confusion, I don't see why anyone can't understand how this might be confusing, the styling of this site and the new Festool USA site is very similar. I commented on styling of the FOG header looking too much like Festool's "new style" during the contest, others expressed concern also. I feel it might be best for the people that know better to stop making comments about Festool "owning" this site.

While Festool doesn't own this site they do own the rights copyrighted pictures of the tools in the header and they have the right to control their use. I think we should follow Matthew's lead and use this an opportunity to make a header that better fits the FOG and its membership.

Those current header pictures look like pictures taken by Festool. If that is the case they are copyrighted.

I would not want my inlays in another forums header without permission. They do not have to have a reason, its their property.

If the current pictures were not cut out of Festools property, brochures, etc and were taken by a personal user of the tools, then Festool really has no standing in asking to have them removed, except that they own the URL name now(not the forum) and probably can dictate what they want within the parameters of Matthews deal with them.

The current header pictures sure look like Festool company taken pictures though. So lets replace them, no biggie.

Nick, the picture of the tools in Andrew's header logos (the current header) are Festool's pictures. And as Matthew has already pointed out Festool didn't have a problem with the use of the header until recently. We'll wait for the response Matthew gets from Festool for a full explanation for the change of hart.

None of this makes any sense to me.

As Brice mentioned, the current headers were chosen in a contest a while back and were approved by Festool.  Festool is not upset about the photos, and this is not a conflict of any kind.  Festool has simply asked me, courteously, to please replace the headers.  They are not complaining or making a big deal about it or anything like that.

The reason I didn't ask "why" is because I trust that if Festool asks me to do something like this, it must be for a legitimate reason.  Honestly, I don't even want to know why.  This is a good example of how I want the forum to have a healthy relationship with Festool, but remain independent of the inner decision-making of the company.

The new photographs will not upset Festool, because they will be created -- and owned -- by FOG members.

I hope this helps clarify the whole thing!

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Good Afternoon,
Thanks Frank for submitting some more images.  We're getting a nice collection together now.

Anyone else want to submit images for the forum header?  It would be nice to have images from several people, for variety.

There's no technical limit on the number of images I can use in the header.  Currently, I am using 10.  but that number could be 12 or 15 with no problem.

So keep submitting photos!  I'm hoping to have the new header images in place by mid-November.

Thanks everyone,
Matthew

Good Afternoon,
Just wanted to post a reminder to everyone that I need to alter the header images in the forum, and I am planning to take care of this in early December when I have more time to spend on it.

I wanted to make another call to members to submit images that can be used in the header of the forum.

Submit photos of your projects, your shop, or yourself and we can make them part of the identity of the Festool Owners Group!

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Good Morning,
I'm putting together the new header images, and I am using the ones submitted by members in this discussion.

I want to use images that have been submitted so far, but some of them need to be submitted a little differently (as attachments).

Specifically, I need the images submitted by Neil in this post.

Neil, can you submit just the project portion of those images?  And please submit them in the size 424x116 pixels.

Everyone, if you want to submit header images, please post them here as attachments!

Thanks,
Matthew

Hey Matt -

Those are NOT my work - I grabbed them from Fine Woodworking as examples - so we don't have rights to use them.

I did include images in this thread that are my work - as attachments - message 24 in the thread.

Neil
