I am now the proud owner of a new TS55 EBQ. As it is my first FESTOOL purchase, I was wondering if anyone would give any advice on cutting the splinter guard,eg with or without a work piece under the guide rail. Any hints or tips (no matter how trivial or basic) would be very apprciated

Welcome to the Festool Owners Group and congratulations on your new purchase! It was the first Festool item I got as well, and I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.

As regards hints and tips, have you downloaded Rick Christopherson's Supplemental Masual for the TS 55? This 2MB PDF document has 27 pages packed with information about your new purchase, from how to trim the splinter guard (on Page 8), to how to cut plastics and aluminium, and many folk would say that it is required reading for all TS55 owners!

Hope you enjoy using your saw!

Bob,

Forrest has given you some excellent advise.  All of Rick's manuals are incredible.  I do not know if Rick covered this or not, but be sure when you cut the splinter guard to use dust collection.  I thought it would come off in a clean strip the first time I did mine.  Instead it turns it into black chunks and powder that gets all over the place.

Yeah the basic guide I got with the saw was enuf to get me started.  Will confess I reread the section on cutting the splinter guard, before even attempting it.  Hung on to the saw like there was no tommorrow whilst doing it.

I would do as suggested and check out the supplemental manual, cause the basic guide I got here in OZ was just that, basic.

Does a great job of cutting formply with the guard in place.

Cutting this stuff with my Makita saw was both a messy experience, not to mention leaving a crappy edge on the sheet.  Have to sell the finished product, so appearance is important.  The ability to vary the speed helps greatly.  Definetely follow the suggested speeds for various materials and take it from there,

Dont think u will regret your purchase.

the Domino Essentials book, the Essentials book on the TS saws has 2 or 3 tips in it that I don't recall seeing elsewhere. Doesn't make it worth $20+,but it's less worthless than the Domino book.
look for it in a book or tool store and scan through it. Won't take 10 minutes unless you're interested in detailed instructions for installing the boom arm.
