OF-FH Routing Aid

I swallowed hard and forked out for one of these recently - proncipallayvto so some awkward edge routing on window repairs - it is very good to use the side supports are very solid which made it easy to do some quite deep edge cuts for splicing in new timber. Eg

Yes you can make one, but by the time you have done this and bought the materials, actually the cost wouldn’t seem unreasonable. I got mine with an eBay discount and paid £192 - I don’t regret it for a moment.

Thanks, [member=2839]scholar[/member], that's good to know. I will most likely need to do the same, but I'm not quite at the "forking over" stage yet.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread….

[member=75933]luvmytoolz[/member] did you ever develop version 2.0 and potentially have a picture?

I am thinking about making one for myself. I am looking for ideas/design inspiration I can use to program my CNC if anyone has suggestions, ideas, or pictures.

I did review the link posted above to the thread showing how Edward made one with his Sharper Original and that was helpful.

Thanks.

[member=28223]SoonerFan[/member] No, but you've reminded me I need to start on it again soon!

Please...don't be sorry, there have been so many items discussed on the FOG over the years that resurrecting old threads is one of the best ways to revisit problems and issues that have plagued all of us and that are still probably current.

Everytime an old thread is resurfaced, I find myself reading it and gleaning more information than before. Resurrecting old threads is a good thing...starting new threads because of laziness is not.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] never thought of it like this before but I like this viewpoint. I did search/read other threads but like the path [member=75933]luvmytoolz[/member] was heading thus responded to this thread. Thanks.

I thought your first design was excellent and am sure the new one will be even better.  BTW how did you mark the black lines on your first design?

No plans as I have so many other projects on the go, but you're not the first to ask so possibly down the track.

I would definitely be interested in one as well!!

Thanks very much for that! I put a lot of thought into the first one making it much more robust than the Festool one, as I just couldn't see how the Festool one would hold position under load, especially with the small knobs on theirs. And I felt vindicated as I had to really tighten the much larger bolts and knobs on mine to completely eliminate movement under load.

So for the next one I'm planning to use thicker perspex for the side guides, 20mm again for the top, and machine grooves into the tops of the edge guides to run a few beads of silicone to vastly increase the grip.

I'll be using M8 or M10 Tee bolts again, but with female spring loaded lever handles instead of knobs so you can quickly tighten with a narrow arc, but then rotate the handle out of the way.

The grooves were all done on my CNC, and are very useful. I'll be enhancing these a little more to improve them.

I still like the idea of using a 30mm guide bushing in the router, but in addition to just 2 perpendicular orientations to suit OF1400 and OF2200 LH and RH users, I'm thinking of also putting in bolts through the top to clamp down any router, ideally using a 30mm guide bushing to centre it. I think this last variant will be very useful.

The dust chute itself definitely needs to be refined, it wasn't anywhere near adequate in use I felt, but I'm still working on how large and effective I can make it so it doesn't impact anything in use.

That's pretty much the plan anyway!

It's quite possible I will, but to be honest I have no timeline in the immediate future as I wouldn't consider selling them unless I was 100% happy with them.

Agree with Cheese, reviving/continuing an existing thread on any topic is best. Also, searching for topics via Google is way more successful than searching within the FOG. Just type Festool Owners and then the topic and you’ll find plenty, with no time constraints.

Good to know that Michael  [thumbs up]  thanks.

Searching the FOG from the FOG can usually lead to a lesson in anger management.  [smile]

I try to resist the temptation to flog our products on FOG, but this thread screams for a link.
https://www.woodpeck.com/mortise-base.html

The early question about offset mortising pushed me over the edge. All you have to do with ours is unlock the knobs in the router base, slide the router to the position you want, then lock it back up.

Thanks, Jeff. I've often wanted to buy the Festool but the cost is up there. I somehow didn't know you guys had this.

[member=7266]jeffinsgf[/member] I would consider that Woodpeckers one far superior to the Festool one for many reasons, not just cause it looks great.

Very nice design!

When I needed one, it was at the outrageous price of $250 haha. That was too much for my limited use so I bought a second edge guide. Works perfectly. The rods go through the 1400 base so you put the second edge guide on the other side. Admittedly, the sides pressing up against the stock aren't that wide, but you can easily put some MDF on that to make them larger, though I didn't need to for routing mortises on the security door

That's funny Jeff because I noticed that recent Woodpecker addition about 3 days ago and was going to mention it on the FOG today...and then I got involved with installing insulation in the garage.  [smile]

I was interested in the Mortise Base because it's 1/2 the price of the Festool offering and I've been threatening to fab up a Festool OF-FH clone for the last 5 years.
