OF1010 Edge Guide Dust Collection

For the OF1010 router with the Festool edge guide (489427), is the dust extraction hood (489565) a better option than the chip guard (437307)?

I've never done a side by side comparison, but my memory is that the dust extraction hood worked fine when in use -- though I rarely use it.  The problem though is that the dust extraction hood is only for when you are using the edge guide while running the bit on the edge, meaning there are a host of applications for the edge guide where you wouldn't be able to use the hood.  Conversely, most edge profiling will be done with a bearing guided bit, meaning that there's no need for the edge guide, and you would want to use the chip guard instead. 

I would just get both.

The regular dust collection works fine for me, for edge routing the 1010 comes with a black chip shield (i guess thats what ya call it ) that attaches to the base and along with the normal dust collect it works well

I believe the chip guard is only used when using the edging plate:

There isn't an equivalent for the OF1400, and anyway that's too heavy to use in this application anyway.

I've been looking at this myself as the edge guide/parallel fence comes without the chip guard. I think you need the 437307 and the previous poster is correct; the other one is for the edging plate. It's a bit confusing that they call the fence an edge guide when there is also an edging plate.

The chip guard (437307) is the clear plastic piece that most places recommend to buy with the edge guide (489427).

Then I came across the dust extraction hood (489565), also a clear plastic piece that attaches to the edge guide (489427), with an attachment port for the dust collection.

The chip catcher (493180) comes with the OF1010 and does great when using a bit that has a bearing.  It is not going to be much use with the edge guide.
