Hello,

Planning a purchase for an OF1400 and trying to figure the uses of the edge guide and guide stop.. Which would you recommend?

I've got a Bosch 1617 with the edge guide and it works really well, I guess I was figuring the guide stop would be more accurate or does each accessory provide it's own use?

Thank you
Stephan

The edge guide is used to position the router a distance from the edge of a board using the board as the reference piece.  So you want to make a cut x distance from the edge of the board. - use the edge guide.

If you want to use a rail as the reference piece then you use the guide stop.  You can place your rail diagonally across the board as an example, clamp it down, and then use the guide stop to adjust to your line and make the cut.

One great thing in my mind about the Festool routers than can get overlooked is that on the base of each router - perhaps not the MFK700 - are centering marks.  Rather than trying to remember offsets for dadoes on a panel for example, if you have a cutter that is the same diameter as your workpiece to be inserted, all you need to do is set up for the center line.

I asked that same question a few months ago and the next day I bought both  [scared]
Just makes sense as they are two accessories used for very different tasks and they the tasks they are associated with are pretty common ones so if you own a Festool router youll end up needing them both at some point anyway.

Ah ok, so both accessories are important!! Thanks guys, and thank you Corwin for the other uses!!

Long shot of a question but does anyone know if the Bosch edge guide works on the 1400?

I don't have the Bosch, but from the specs I've read on reviews it looks like the diameter of the rods, and their spread BOTH differ from that of the OF1400. The OF1400 uses 8mm rods spaced 79mm (or 80 depending on where I measure on mine) apart center-to-center. The center of the rods are 17mm up from the base.

Yet, you might be able to make a conversion block with rods sized and spaced for the router on one side and the edge guide on the other.

On Edit: The specs I saw may not be accurate enough to judge if it will fit on the OF1400.
