OF2200 bit and one pass groove !

Hi,

2 quick questions:

-I would like to groove oak 10mm deep(25/64") with a D10mm bit(25/64") in ONE pass. Do you guys think it is possible using my brand new of2200?

-Do you think that a festool 12mm shank bit like Festool Bit491086 is a good choice for this application? Any other recommandations?

The router has plenty of power to accomplish the cut.

I do not have that bit. I do own a few others Festool router bits, I find them to be some of the best bits I've ever used.

Any idea of the maximum depth you can go in one pass versus diameter? Any Math here ?
 
It'll do 13 mm x 20 mm deep in pine no problem... Although I'm not sure you would want to push it beyond that for a mortise as there are too many chips being created too fast to extract without clogging the hole. An up spiral bit might work better.

General rule I was taught is that the depth of cut should not exceed the bit diameter. Therefore with a 10mm bit, the maximum depth per pass is 10mm, so you're fine.
 
This makes no sense jrb. I've heard it before too but.. If you have a 6mm cutter cutting 6mm deep I think it could cut more but a 25mm bit would not cut 25mm deep. Just doesn't seem right to me

It's a bit of an old wives tale with regard to depth of cut relative to diameter of cutter,  many shallow cuts with no strain on the router and bit will result in a much better quality of cut and a longer lifespan of the bit, there is no golden rule as there are far too many variables with regards to the  material you are routing. You can always practice with scrap to find the optimum depth relative to feed rate etc.

In the router class, we did raised panel doors on the CMS and the OF2200 in a single pass.  If it can do that, it won't have any problems with what you're describing.

Fred, I have always been told that panel raising cutters and door set cutters were only to be used in a router fixed in a table and never to be used freehand.  So are these some special cutters or is it possible with the festool big router?

  In the video it looks like you are doing multiple passes with the panel raising bit, without adjusting anything. Are you just physically holding the router short of  taking the full cut?

We had the OF2200 mounted in the CMS router table.  I think it could be done hand held w/ the 2200, but personally, I'd be afraid to try it.

Don't tell anyone----I've used my 3-⅝" CMT panel raising bit in the 2200 on 13/16" oak, hand held, one pass. Router never slowed down.
