A little more investigation shows that this is a common problem, even with Festool (allegedly) suggesting that you should remove the plunge springs. I found an article on the Internet Archives that's no longer available from Ideal Tool in Australia that shows how to remove the spring and it's much easier to adjust bit height now.
The downside is that you obviously have to put the spring back in if you want to remove the OF 2200 from the table for handheld use.
Crazy that Festool hasn't engineered a solution that works effectively when it sells it as an integrated system.
