OF2200 with CMS: router height adjustment

A little more investigation shows that this is a common problem, even with Festool (allegedly) suggesting that you should remove the plunge springs. I found an article on the Internet Archives that's no longer available from Ideal Tool in Australia that shows how to remove the spring and it's much easier to adjust bit height now.

The downside is that you obviously have to put the spring back in if you want to remove the OF 2200 from the table for handheld use.

Crazy that Festool hasn't engineered a solution that works effectively when it sells it as an integrated system.

@garrymartin That is pretty shocking from Festool especially as a, as far as I'm aware, officially supported option over here. Removing springs sounds like something you really shouldn't need to do!

Thanks [member=7493]Sparktrician[/member]. I'm confident it's set up correctly and that thread just confirms that. As some people have no issues, I guess we're back to the original observation that some OF 2200 routers have issues and others don't. Plenty of warranty left on my machine, so I'll see how it goes with the spring removed and decide what to do from there.

Of course, if someone from Festool wants to confirm what course of action I should be taking, and whether removing the spring is really the correct approach, that would be awesome...  [poke] [member=41214]Phil Beckley[/member]

[member=11629]GarryMartin[/member], I've never seen a need to remove any plunge springs. Just be sure to NOT lock the plunge mechanism when installing the OF 2200 into the CMS.

No issues with the 2200 in my CMS. It's been in the plate since the day the CMS was available in the U.S. I have multiple 2200's so I don't have to pull the unit from the plate.

I do lock the 200, prior to running it, loosen to adjust.

I'll take the OF 2200 out of the CMS OF later, put the springs back in, and repeat the installation just in case there's a minor mis-alignment somewhere. Will report back... Thanks guys.

After installing mine the first time I marked the positions of the clamps and router to make reassembling easier.  Getting everything aligned the first time was a project.

I'll have to try my 2200 out , I've only used the 1400 in the CMS so far. I'd heard the weight made the 2200 hard to raise, so I've never bothered trying it.

Resurrecting this post as I'm suffering from exactly the same problem described by the original poster.

My OF 1400 has always been fine, but not so long ago I bought the OF 2200 for use in the table and have been setting it up today in anger for the first time. I *cannot* raise the height of the bit with the height adjuster, although lowering it is not a problem. As originally noted, the router simply tips and binds.

Do I really have to send the OF 2200 back to Festool under warranty as a potentially faulty unit, or are there other reasons for this sort of behaviour when using the OF 2200 in the CMS OF that I might be able to resolve myself?

I think I'm going to just leave the spring out for now (which solves the problem), but I've come across many people who use the OF 2200 and OF 1010 handheld for the ergonomics and awesome dust extraction, and keep the OF 1400 for use in the CMS. This is certainly an option, and I could always swap the OF 2200 in for anything that needed some extra horsepower... [scratch chin]

Id send it in for service if its still under warranty or even if it isn't.  I like my tools working as promised and designed.  Ya never know what the issue is and could end up leading to something worse or worst case cause injury .

30 years building stuff, have been using Festool's machines 20+, since before they became "Festool". Started amassing my personal collection of Festool machines in 2005 and have since invested a small fortune in the brand, and became a member here about 5 minutes ago.
I love the system, and most of their machines are top notch, with some caveats. I don't feel the need to mention here, except for one; their tolerances in some critical areas are more than they should be. Example; today I'm setting up my OF 2200 in my CMS-GE table. I arrive at complete assembly and the router will not lift. It is binding on the post opposite the lifting screw. Is this a defect? This is slightly aggravating, I felt. So what do I do? I go to the www. Within 30 minutes I found what may be the solution; remove the compression spring. Located the access and found that this potentially inherent flaw is designed to be quickly remedied by removing the top cover and turning the plastic quick release spring retainer and out it comes! Now to reassemble minus one spring, which I'm not crazy about. But I'll be happy to be moving forward and I anticipate that this router will be used in the cms 75% of the time, or more.
