[size=14pt] I am currently sanding some ply with a view to coating it with a countertop oil finish.

Readily available, I have some Australian OrganOil Hard Burnishing Oil which is Tung Oil based, and some Kunos Countertop Oil.

Looking at the instructions on the Kunos bottle it specifically states that it is not suitable for vaneer/ply. There is no such warning on the OrganOil tin other than a recommendation to use only one coat with ply.

Researching the web, there are some discussions regarding oil finishes delaminationg ply and vaneer, or at best a blotchy finish and excessive grain rise. However there is other opinion that says none of this is a problem.

So why does Kunos caution against it?

What are others experiences?

With appreciation.

[size=14pt]Bump

Please do not think you have to use the brands discussed to have an opinion.

With appreciation.  [smile]

Hmmm....  interesting.

I am in the middle of a small project and was planning to use Watco "danish oil" -- I'm not aware of any prohibition on that.

But maybe I need to do some research!

For what it's worth.....

I've used Boiled linseed oil on maple plywood.  I did a 50/50 mix with paint thinner.  I read that thinning the boiled linseed would help the drying time.

I had the cabinets that I applied the oil on in my shop.  You could see them in some of my older videos, they have the "T-Loc" handles for door pulls.

They now live in my basement.  They've been through some  temperature changes with the seasons .  But, I've never noticed any delimitation or blotchiness.

If you're worried about it, can you make up some test pieces and watch them over a period of time?

Mahogany plywood, 2 coats of Surfix HD oil. The oil had no affect on the veneer.

I think the one coat is to keep the oil from affecting the glue.

I've used Watco and other oil finishes over the years on oak, walnut and maple ply and haven't ever had any issues as described.  As suggested, try some on a scrap piece or two and see how it turns out.

[size=14pt]Thanks guys, will go for it using OrganOil.

Hopefully you will not hear any screams from down here!  [eek]  [big grin]

Edit. It worked a treat. Thanks again.
