I though with p40 it would eat the paint how wrong was I i think I need a concrete sand ha ha. The corridor was easy but the stairs is like concrete the top stairs on the main stair took three hours and I over heated my midi  [scared]

I bet that paint would have come away easily with a heat gun...in hindsight like.

The customer said she tried everything including nitro morse and it didn't make much difference i tried scraping with a chisel that worked but made loads of mess. Gonna get a heavy duty paint scraper tomorrow

The RO90 really is a bit too small for this kind of job. Looking at the pics I suspect the paint is really old lead paint and some of that stuff is incredibly hard, especially if it's a thicker layer. I think a chemical stripper would get the quickest result and keep the contamination as low as possible.

A heat gun can work but it is also pretty slow. I once made the mistake of buying a cheap gun for about that price, and threw it away after 20 minutes as it did absolutely nothing. The professional gun I got now at least works as advertised, but is still pretty slow. Using a torch is definitely the fastest solution, but unfortunately not for indoors.

Nippy,
That is a steal for a heat gun.  I paid nearly 10x that for the one I bought 20-30 years ago in the states.

You might want to make sure you have lots of ventilation doing this indoors.  I've only used mine outdoors, but I recall that the fumes were really nasty.

Be careful!  Mike A.

This is the tool for paint removal.

I do tons of staircases, you need an edger. Go on eBay and get a Clarke super7R.  It is the only way to do it

Ye I the  ro90 is small I tried to get the 150 but by the time I bought the sand paper and the ro150 it was to expensive at the moment you can get shapir in p24  in 150 but not in the 90. That's my fear is the smell in the house with the heat gun or chemicals thanks for the help

I sanded alot of old paint off loads of big old beams and trusses in my house. Tried everything to get it off, best thing I found was RO 150, got through loads of paper though.

I use all the rotex's every time I do a staircase, but they are best for risers and stringers.  For treads, you NEED an edger.  I have a RAS, it has its uses, but for steps, it's not good.    Chemical strippers are ok, by far, the best stripper we all can buy is called "dads ez strip".  It's absolutely incredible. I have tried most every stripper.  Nothing comes close to the dads.  It's nasty though.

Anyone know of a US distributor for that Metabo paint remover?  I'm painting my house this coming spring and I think between that and the RAS I'd be set nicely.

Figures, just checked amazon US.  Of course they sell it, lol.  $300.  I wonder what the blade life is?  4 sided cutters, so you can swap cutting edges and a 10 pack of cutters is $35.  Not bad, I guess it'll just depend on how long the blade lasts vs abrasive life on a sander.

Well I got it finish. I went old school on it ha ha carbide paint scarper and some elbow grease. Then went thru my grits on the rotex [big grin]

Petty he is selling it in America probably would of bought it if it was in the uk

I can seem to edit the header it's suppose to say hell not heck
