Pinner recomendation

I’ve had my eyes on both Grex and Cadex for a while now.  Are there any Cadex users out there in FOG land. I don’t see too many reviews about that brand.

I see 9 variants of the 23 Ga,  2 18 Ga, 1 21 Ga and 1 15 Ga.  RE the 23 Ga, the variants may simply be max fastener length, but is there anything else that differentiates them?

I have used my Hitachi 15 Ga angled finisher for 15 years.  It seems to work very well, but it is the old model.  I haven’t heard good things about the new model. I also used an Airy 18 Ga for years, but it got dropped on concrete and the body cracked (not repairable).  It too was the older and better model. Currently I am using an Hitachi 18 Ga.  I feel it is ok, but not great. My micro pinned is a 23 Ga Bostich. I have no complaints about that, except the case latches broke almost right away.

Generally I don’t buy tools for the sake of buying them.  Generally I wait until a tool needs to be replaced. I may not buy new nail guns anytime soon, but I am curious as to the differences in the Grex 23 Ga guns especially.

I have 4 Grex guns, all work well. The balance on the 15 ga. could be better.

I have a 21 ga. Cadex, the blower valve leaks. Something I’ll have to fix. Other than that no issues with the gun.

I have the both grex and cadex 18 Ga.  My cadex will jamb, grex never does. I've dropped my grex from a ladder to concrete a few times.  keeps on going. Recently bought a cadex 21 ga.  It also jambs and my friends grex 21 ga never does.  Blower leaks every once in a while also.  I really want to like the cadex better because they feel better in the hand to me.  They just aren't as reliable

I have the PUR hot melt too. Maybe buy a slower set hot melt glue?

The PUR system only allows 30, 60 & 75 second set times. And maybe half of that duration is the actual work time available. I purchased the PUR system specifically for the reason that I could hold the item in place (drywall trim on a round window) for only 15-20 seconds and then move on.

Nice closet!

Thanks Peter... [big grin]

Not to hijack this thread but here's a before photo. This closet is now part of the master bedroom loft.

Yeah, the pieces are too long for that.

That is a nice closet.

Used the Pinner today on the trim project. It worked well. The pins held the trim in place while the Titebond 2 setup.

I'm going against the tide of opinion here on this one.

I've done a lot of applied moldings on a "skin" like you describe. If you are going to be hanging a lot of 3/4 poplar stock and asking the adhesive behind the plywood to hold everything up whilst you are waiting for the cure overnight, go with the Cadex 21 GA with a 2" nail. I promise you'll not regret it. The 21 has so much more purchase on the substrate and the hole is not that much larger. I've completely stopped using a 23 GA on kitchen crown because it is never secure enough. If you are going to use CA glue with activator, you might get away with the 23 GA. Best of luck with the project.

Here is a partially done picture. I had to clean up as my wife was throwing a baby shower.

I just laid in and finished the Herringbone floor and installed the doors. There was no entrance to that room here. I still have to add the horizontal pieces that will make up the approximate 2'x2' squares.

This trim was really my first use of my Felder combination shaper/saw/JP. I need to make some back band, that stuff was expensive!

The Pinner along with the glue actually worked well.

I bought a Cadex 23 ga pinned about 8 years ago, because it Took highest honors in a review by Fine Homebuilding.  I’ve never regretted that purchase. I used it last month to hold backs on cabinets until glue dried. I used it to install baseboard, shoe mounding, and door trim. I’ve also used it in jig building to hold wood until glue dries.  I’ve only had 2 jams out of maybe 1000 nails.

At IWF Atlanta I tried out the Grex Cordless 23ga pinner. It is one sweet gun.im considering selling my Cadex.

I've used multiple makes of air tools over the years.  Senco was the industrial standard and I had and still have a couple.  My go to's now are my Grex's, 18 ga, 23 ga pinners, 23 ga stapler, 7/16 stapler.

Had a small last minute job to do yesterday, and my go to Senco store was out of 23ga.... So I picked up a Bostich to do the job. What a pos.... I grabbed it like any other pinner and immediately sent a pin flying around the room. I shot three more before I figured out the safety release was on the handle. I suffered thru the job and took it straight back. Too dangerous. I've been wanting a Cadex or Grex and this experience confirms my desire.....

I got the Ryobi 23 ga pinner.  I don't use it a lot, but I like it so far.  Anyone else have more experience with it than I do?
