Problems with periods after URLs?

This was reported in another thread and try as I may, I can't replicate the problem.  Anyone else having this problem?  The problem, as reported, is that if you include a URL in your post and the forum automatically creates the hyperlink that it includes the period at the end of the sentence in the link.  So it would look something like this, which messes up the link: http://www.festoolusa.com.  I intentionally forced the period to be included in this example just as a demonstration.  If I just put the link in there, I can't get the forum to include the period on its own.

PS - Dan, you're right.  We won't be changing forum software any time soon because of the amount of effort versus the minimal payoff in terms of functionality, etc.

Dan,

Thanks for the links, one thing about your links, when you include a "period" at the end of them they don't work unless the period is deleted.
Steve,

Thanks for the heads-up.  It's fixed now.

Unfortunately this is a problem with some forum software packages (like SMF) because they include periods when they parse the url address.  When you place a url at the end of a sentence (like I normally do) and end the sentence with a period, the SMF software includes the period with the link.  It's irritating.

Other software packages (like vBulletin) don't have this problem.  When you include a URL address and close it with a period, the software ignores the period when creating the link.

So why doesn't Festool move to the another forum software package?  Because it's huge effort when you have a well-established, customized forum like FOG.  Other forum packages have some nice features, but I don't think it's worth the risk and effort to convert.  I wouldn't do it and don't recommend it to others.

Regards,

Dan.

Shane,

I have never had that problem. The periods are always excluded from the link.

I most times use the insert a Hyperlink button at the top of the reply page. When I do that those long links become very short.

I think the problem happens when you paste a link and then end the sentence by adding a period, http://www.festoolusa.com/default.aspx.     The links Chris posted don't have the period underlined, the link I posted and that doesn't work has the period underlined.

The software isn't adding the period, it's just normal use of punctuation when the link is being pasted at the end of a sentence.  Hope that helps to clarify.

I think you nailed it, Steve.  The difference is copy and pasting the URL.  If it's just typed and with a period then it's fine.  The bizarre part is that the preview doesn't include the period.  Only when you post does it get bunged up.  Thanks.  I'll have to see if there's a solution when I have some free time.

Steve,

In my post I copy & pasted the links & then ended the sentences with periods.
Could this be a browser problem? I am using Firefox.

Chris

I have tried this several different times, with several different browsers. If I copy & paste the link or type it & add the period, the period is shown in the preview & not included in the link.

Chris, not sure what you're doing differently.  I am also using Firefox 3.5.30729 (latest and greatest version) on Windows XP Pro.  If I copy and paste and then post the period is included just as reported.  Very odd.

Ah ha!  Think it was the lack of an "http://" in your original, Chris.  Not that the "fix" to the problem is to leave that off.

Well at least you know what the source of the problem is.
I got in the habit of not copying the http several years ago because it was related to a problem back then. I do not remember what the problem was though.
I got in a hurry when I made the last post because my wife was needing me in the house.

When posting, I think it's important to preview every post and click every link in the post to be sure it's working.    Of course, that's for you to do and not me - mine are always perfect!  [embarassed]

I try to do the same Dan, but sometimes we do not take the time.
