This is a second design that's also for a coffee table (like project 39) but with some differences. I ended up not having enough Sapele so I had to make some modifications on the fly.

The contrasting wood is Canarywood.

Matt - you are a fearless woodworker when it comes to choosing projects. What makes you special: you actually finish them [smile]

thanks for the inspiration and for sharing step by step!

Hans

That's a cool looking design. I have a bit of a concern over strength though. The shaped (curved) ends have a rather thin area of short grain because of cutting the shape rather than bending it.
It takes quite a bit more work to build a form and go through the trouble to make them as a bent lamination, but it would be a lot stronger. The weight load on that lower shelf isn't likely to be that much, but if someone drags that table sideways?

Interesting design.

You exhibit courage in your efforts!

The stepped dowels for joining are the weak point.  Did you consider a tenon on the end of the arched piece with your Shaper to fit in a mortise on the legs, also with the Shaper?  That would have given you a bit more structure in that joint.  If someone sits or tries to scoot that table, the point of failure will be at those points.  I can't tell but it does not look like there is an apron around the top of the legs, which would reduce the stress on that joint.

Really like your choices of woods, Matt.

[member=59331]TSO Products[/member] no problem Hans! Thanks so much!

[member=58857]Crazyraceguy[/member] thanks! totally. A bent lamination probably would have been way better. Agreed. I agree that those are the weak points. So, the curved parts are glued to the legs but the whole thing isn't glued together yet. I'm going to add an apron on the top I think which hopefully should help.

[member=167]neilc[/member] thanks so much! Totally agreed. It isn't glued up yet. I'm thinking I'll add an apron on the top, relatively thick (I have some 6/4 Sapele left) and that should really help strengthen it. The Shaper would have been a great idea. I got a little carried away this weekend  and just was having fun with it without too much thought.

So, there isn't an apron right now but it isn't glued up yet. I will add an apron at the top around the legs. Good idea. and that should help a bit.

Also it'll give me some way to attach the top, which I hadn't solved yet. I can do figure 8s or something in the apron.

Thanks everyone.

Matt

All done team! thanks for all the help. it's not perfect. but I'm happy I tried it and the curves were fun!

Nice work, Matt!  The apron around the top improves the look and I'm sure it helps with stability.

[member=50292]Peter_C[/member] thank you!
[member=2242]tallgrass[/member] thanks!
[member=167]neilc[/member] thanks! I think it did add a lot of structural integrity.
