I'm curious what is the narrowest material you feel comfortable using the HK(C) on, such that the rail is still balanced enough to not endanger the cut?  Anyone do 2" regularly?

The narrowest stock I've used mine with is some 1x3 trim, it worked OK. If this is going to be a routine thing, I'd get the short rail though.

When I first bought the HKC I only got the two longer rails, but decided after using it to build my daughters deck, that I should have the short one also.  I love this saw and since I already have the two batterys that I might as well buy the cordless jigsaw also...the Festool addiction is never ending.  Oh, and then I bought another battery!  God help my bank account if they decide to import the 85.  [scared]

I have an HK.  I haven't used it much yet.  I would just nail together some jig for backing up narrow stock or resting the FSK guide on.  You're not likely to be up on a ladder cutting 1/4 round anyway, but that would be a funny situation.  There are hand held shear cutters for that, actually.

That's kind of a silly situation, but keep in mind the 420 rail is actually 32" long and the saw is 12 lbs or so.  You can handle it with one hand but it's not likely to be simple to learn to do juggling with it.  Such situations are not likely to be common.  I bought the HK so I don't have to have a sliding miter saw on site.  I have a Metabo Secanta, which is portable slide table saw, so the HK adds pick-up and cut speed out of the truck but I have the Secanta in there too. Between them they don't replace a sliding 12" miter saw for running mitered moulding all day, but for crosscuts the HK is light and easy to get set up.

Picked up the saw yesterday along with the 420 rail, and put it to work immediately on the job I'm doing. Works brilliantly, and I'm relieved I didn't have to bring my whole kapex setup just for some piddly straight cuts on the 2" stock I'm working with.
