Quick OF1400 question

quote- Greg
"I think the issue here is that Festool did not designate this base a a solution to the problem you guys are trying to solve. This base, IMO, was designed to create a smaller hole to eliminate empty space around the bit. I agree it would have been nice if it was designed at 5mm to allow for setting off the rail with the guide-stop. Other solutions would be to make an adjustable foot with a longer registration surface or add a 5mm shim to your base. There have been times when I have routed with the guiderail and foot while the foot was riding on the MFT surface because the router was overhanging a narrow workpiece. This is where having an adjustable foot comes in handy. I think the foot would be more warmly received if it were about 2 inches longer, or even more, where it could bridge gaps or not run right off the end of a workpiece at the end of a pass."

I agree 100%

Well, the question that Alex2 asked has not really been answered.  I, too, am interested in the OF1400.  However, after looking at the manual at festoolusa and looking in the catalog, I'm not sure what parts to order.  The manual shows a micro-adjustable guide rail adapter on page 18.  I can not find this on any web site.  Also, the catalog only shows guide rods for the OF2200.  I understand I need the foot.

The question was answered in the first reply, you need the guide stop part #492601. There was some confusion about the support foot being included with the router, Tom cleared this up in his reply:

The "Foot" or "Router Support" comes with the Guide Stop. There is, also included with the Guide Stop, a thumb screw used to attach it to the router.

The part number shown in the first link above is for a replacement foot because sometimes they break. All you get is the plastic foot. It isn't usable alone, it requires something to attach it to the router (the thumb screw).

Tom

In summery, you only need to buy the guide stop separately, the fine adjuster is built in to the guide stop and the support foot and thumb screw is included. The guide rods are included with the OF1400 router. I hope this help cut through all the confusion.

Can't imagine why I might be confused.  You're saying the router comes with the rods (which aren't mentioned as included with the OF1400) and the support foot and knob come with the guide stop  (which isn't mentioned as included).  Why would Festool be so sloppy with their catalogs? Guess we'll see what arrives....

And they add all of the I think this or that is included you've read here and the whole thing is a mess.

I agree better descriptions of each item that is included with a tool are needed. I've found McFeely's is the best website to see what is included with each tool although, they are perfect either. It's really frustrating when you didn't get to take advantage of the free shipping because you didn't know what was or wasn't included. Or worse, when you've bought an extra part or accessory that is already included with the tool.

I looked at the catalog and totally agree that the description of the included "ingredients'' should be looked at and frankly can't understand any of this for the following reason:

For the 1400 per the printed catalog on page 89 you see the chart that has the contents marked.  On page 92 you have item # 25 - the guide stop - that doesn't say what else you need.  But it is safe to assume you will need the rods and the foot.  Of course you could also be buying the edge guide on page 93 - item 30 - that you would need guide rods to use.  But then when you look for the guide rods - the only ones shown are on page 93 - item 29 - and they are for the OF2200.

How do you get the guide rods unless they are included with your tool?  Why are they included with your tool if there is nothing else included with the tool to attach to them?

Just my musing.

I suspect that most dealers treat their customers as I do, which is to say that if someone orders an accessory in duplicate, I point it out and make sure they meant to. Last week I had a customer that ordered the OF 1400 Guide Stop and the Router Support. I put the Router Support in my shirt pocket (just in case he really wanted 2 of them) when I went to his shop to deliver the Guide Stop but removed it from the order. It's quite common for people to misunderstand the combinations of accessories and what they are used for. That's why I prefer to talk to people and understand their usage rather than just take blind orders.

Festool tools often have multiple ways to perform the same tasks and talking through things with the end-user can sometimes result in a simpler or less expensive solution. Sometimes they already have what it takes to perform the task and haven't thought of using what they have in a different way. I'm all for people getting whatever they want but occasionally, the options are misunderstood.

Incidentally, I don't charge shipping on any Festool, Stabila, or VETO PRO PAC orders in the contiguous 48 and generally not Alaska or Hawaii. If the site adds shipping or other charges to one of those orders, I remove it before processing.

My website also tells you what comes with each tool and shows the items in images. I did notice that I missed the router rods when I put the Festool routers up. Doh!

Went ahead and bought the OF1400, guide stop and MFT/3 yesterday! Nerve-racking. But I made the decision to buy from a local retailer.  They were very enthusiastic and just wanted to demo and demo and demo the tools.  Said I could borrow their demo Domino next time I had a project to check it out!! So I think it's worth paying the local sales tax.

Anyway the OF1400 definitely (as of this date) comes with the guide rods, there is a diagonal slot at the bottom of the systainer for them.  The guide stop definitely comes with the support foot.

Two things struck me right off the bat.

First, the new splinter guard material totally rocks! I cuts perfectly smooth with no little bits of black sticking around.  Much easier to see the target cut lines.

Second, the vacuum hose which fits the 55 perfectly/tightly doesn't stay in the dust hood on the 1400.  I remembered I bought some friction disks from Lee Valley a few years ago.  I put two disks INSIDE the port of the 1400 at opposite sides.  These hold the vac hose in very nicely.  You can get them here:
