Raaco - there’s a little bit of Festool in it

This I have wanted to do for a little while.
Either hacking a new SYS 5 or making a base, with a pull out support shelf..
I did the latter.
This came out very useful, being a Raaco fan, it’s obvious to try merge systainer compatibility.

Raaco Handy Box
Secured to base with easy to remove cleats:

Pullout tray:

In a stack, T-lock, classic SYS and rail compatible:

I’m going to do one more, but only T-Lock compatible (3D printed feet) and presumably a tray on top.

Those Raaco trays look a lot like the TANOS Rack Systainer ones. Possible these are one and the same ?

Looks like the drawers are the same, but the cases are a bit different: the Tanos' have the Systainer Classic clips.

Love the Raaco drawers as you can reconfigure the drawers with various combinations of different size inserts (many different sizes available), and you can carry the whole drawer to where you are working or just carry an individual insert.

Yes, me too. I also have 4 Raaco tool boxes, a couple of some other sortainer from Raaco - all can be used with the inserts across each other. Sort of the same as with the new SYS3 sortainer with clear lid ..  [wink]

Mino, that classic SYS with Raaco collaboration.. I’d take one, two, three in a heartbeat.
Seth here are also familiar with this one. Too bad there hasn’t been released a new version of this. I guess the new sortainer is somewhat that.
So, maybe, the “new SYS3 3 drawer sortainer” will be with the new bins?

A tip, for those who don’t know:
You can grab one drawer from the Raaco handy box and place it inside a systainer - if you have room in height  [wink]

Price is, well, it is what it is. But they are avaiable.

I was looking at these a lot but decided to forego eventually. Not wanting non-standard trays which I cannot use elsewhere. Given these are indeed "standard" Raaco ones, I may reconsider still. Would have to think about the existing trays I use now though.

The "drawers" / cases / boxes of the Tanos Racktainers and the Raaco units are both Raaco. The inserts are both Raaco as well. They are the same and 100% interchangeable.

    In Raaco terms ------------

The clear modular boxes that actually hold items are Inserts. The ones that fit in these are the 55 (mm height) series. And the A71, A73, A75, A78. are 24mm tall that can be double stacked.

The case the holds the Inserts is called an Assorter. These are Assorter 55. There are two types of interchangeable lids. One smooth on the inside and one that has anti-migration ribs.

The case that holds four Assorters is called a Handy Box.

The Tanos / Festool Racktainer holds four Assorter 55s.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are other types and sizes of Assorters and Raaco makes other similar storage lines. So pay attention to exactly what you are buying.

[member=1619]SRSemenza[/member] - Thanks Seth!
Given a small trial, I really like it in use - it becomes a shelf for whatever use too: a small drill, some fasteners, screwdrivers etc. (That’s why I glued on some very low fences to the shelf too)
Though, keep in mind; weight increases very fast on such a build. Instead of 6mm ply for the shelf, a 4mm (or 3mm) would do when having a small fence.
I’m actually so pleased with it so I’ll be giving it some finish. Thinking of Osmo or similar in dark slate grey (No painting - no need to hide the ply - it might even look good with dark stain to match the black plastic.

[member=61254]mino[/member] - Thanks! I didn’t know they where still available.. It’s pricey, but so are Raaco and Festool’s drawer systainers.. hmm - Now I really like how mine came out, sitting on top of a stack no matter which systainer under and with the shelf it’s very useful..

So, today I was making room for my new TSO connector dogs, they now sit proud, and I wanted to see if I could make room for 2 Bessey horizontal lever clamps. Managed one, in conjunction with the favourite Festool screw clamps  [smile] One is better than none..  [big grin]
This plywood will also be stained to match the black interior better. It came out really nice, there should be room for a couple of thumb wheels for the connector dogs too.
Maybe it’ll be Festool’s own horizontal clamps in there instead?

/Stig

Looks very nice.

Looking at that horizontal clamp - did you consider a dog hole in the ply, placing the Bessey(s) into it like in an MFT? Possibly making a small-hole also through the insert for the screw so the clamp can use the full vertical space of the systainer and sit as deep as possible. That way two may fit and they should stay pretty accessible.

Organizationally, -I- would not look to squeeze just one clamp in this way - either a set/all or none and would rather put, e.g., four Festool screw clamps in there. Easier on my mind that way.

I lately moved away from hunting space-efficiency to "brain-efficiency"first, ergonomics/ease-of-reach second and space as the last of the key metrics. If somethings not fit -all- somewhere, I rather find a different place to store the items but keep them together. Getting (ready to become) old I guess. Heh.

FestitaMakool that is a cool build.  What is the base you have used to allow tanos compatibility?

Thanks Mino. Yes, i considered placing it upright - with a hole of the bottom of the original insert it barely fits - it’s too tall really. I just found that I could bring one of these together with what was intended. I didn’t bother doing more. These Besseys I try to spread out, so that I have a chance of bringing at least one..  [big grin]

With the TSO connector dogs, this kit can be quite sufficient on the whole, and with minimal work in adapting a few extras. I’ve always liked the idea of looking into any of my tool carriers and spot if if forgot to put one ore more items back in when finished. With a tray, that’s not gonna happen.. I know.

Thanks, it’s base is from the new Planex top for the CT 2X and up.

How does the dog on the bottom of the Bessey come apart?  I'm thinking you might be able to swap the bolt for a shorter one, so the dog is open on the bottom.  Then you'd need a knob with a male thread, which isnt' hard to find.  That might let you fit 2 in the box?

Here’s the “exploded” view of the parts that make up Bessey’s dog hole version.
So, yes it’s easy to fit a different length bolt to it too. I kind of like the Bessey knob.. it’s female with brass insert, so it’s easy to undo and locks smoothly. But it’s possible to do as you suggests with a male knob. I want to have the rail clamps, at least two, so upright storing is still limited to one Bessey (I think)

Thank you. I guess you cut all the top bits off to get a flat top?

No need to find any more sharp things than a torx T20 driver and remove 3 screws  [wink]
Actually, this base would be a very interesting item to purchase separately (w/o the Planex top)
It’s has several mounting holes, compatibility with all systainers and the Bott rail system (The Bott proprietary here in Europe is another discussion..)
But, still good for making bases for anything one wants to adapt to one’s systainers. It’s a bit expensive since the Planex top is linked to it though. [smile]

Actually, in DE #205274 it goes €27 -> €10 cheaper than the SYS-CART base going for € 35+ and even cheaper than a SYS1.

Would not fetch cheaper than €20+ even standalone. The Planex top is the "cheap" part as it does not need to be accurate or strong. The "expensive" part is the Systainer-class modling which we need to begin.

Thanks for this!
I could not have imagined these are two pieces - even walking around a Planex set ... why on earth would someone be checking this out ... LOL.

[member=71478]FestitaMakool[/member]
Maybe make a standalone thread - with a couple photos - about this "Universal Systainer BottomTM" part?

I am 100% there will be  LOT of people happy about who may not discover it otherwise.

[member=61254]mino[/member] & [member=71478]FestitaMakool[/member]

Yes please do start a separate thread regarding the Planex base and how you used it.  I didn't read [member=61254]mino[/member] s last post properly and went on a mission to find the part number myself, turns out [member=61254]mino[/member] had already put the part number in his post.  I've asked Festool if the bottom part only is available as a spare part rather than just buying 205274 and discarding the top part.  Not hopeful it's available as a spare part, I suspect they'll want you to buy the entire bit i.e. 205274.

It's not to expensive and could be extremely useful.  Nice find and great execution.

Hey Festita, you're lucky to have purchased the newer version of the Bessey clamp as it has a closed bottom and is a smaller package.

The early version produced from 2011 to 2017/2018 had an open bottom and it needed to have the black aluminum 1/2" thick plate attached to hold the screw-in dog.

Thanks for the cheering folks!  [big grin]

I’ll start a thread, give me a couple of days, I need to get time to dismantle the base and do a reverse mounting of that Planex top. Need some daylight for the photos to be ok too.

To Festool Germany and Festool USA: Your buyers need to follow up closely and be prepared for a non logical and non expected rising curve in your logistics system for this part no’: 205274  [big grin]

For the for now, not used top part of this item I’m looking into fixing it to the hatch/handle of my CT Midi - to have somewhere to rest the hose and wands. It needs to be quick removable though in case I need a systainer on top instead.

I’ll add a second version I made for my other Raaco rack here soon too.
