I am not sure I understand what you mean...
Amazon started charging sales tax on items THEY sold in Sept 2012. But that does not effect all Internet retailers.
Here is an example. If I was to buy a 1400 EQ router from "Amazon", I would pay sales tax because Amazon is the retailer. If I click on the "8 new" link just after the description, I will see a list of other internet dealers selling "through" Amazon, but more and likely there will be no sales tax. ToolNut is a good example - but they are out of New York... I end up paying Amazon and ToolNut ships me the router

The advantage of buying "through" Amazon is they make it really convenient to look up past purchases in my order history (which goes back to 1999). Remember when Amazon use to have a "Tool Crib" and sent out catalogs with great deals? Also, Amazon has outstanding customer service. Even if the new internet sales bill gets passed - I would still probably buy from Amazon since I subscribe to Prime and they make it very convenient.
Unfortunately my other favorite tool dealer - McFeelys also charges sales tax to California now so I can't use them either
