Recommended Bits for OF 1400 Copying Ring (metric)

I'm considering purchasing a few of the OF 1400 copying rings which are all in metric.  I'd like to use metric down cut or compression bits with these copying rings.  I am aware that I could use a guide bushing to get imperial offsets but the goal in this case is to make it simple, e.g., 10 mm down cut spiral bit that will fit into an available OF 1400 collet and have a nice simple offset from a 30 mm copying ring.

whiteside does make 10 mm downcuts, but they only fit a 10 mm collet, which Festool does not make for the OF 1400. (although, I suppose I could go with an 8 mm downcut which fits the 8 mm collet)

any recommendations from those utilizing metric copying rings with metric cutters would be much appreciated!

[member=72891]AstroKeith[/member] Any recommendations on where you get those cutters?  I'd love to get a quality down cut spiral bit with 1/2 in shank and 10 mm cutter.

I found a 10 mm shank / 10 mm cutter from Whiteside, but apparently Festool doesn't make a 10 mm collet available in the US?

Here in the US, metric cutters are a bit hit-or-miss. Some sizes are not to hard to find, but none are as easy as it should be. Hopefully this will get resolved soon, metric everything seems to be gaining, but we're not even close yet. Just getting 8mm shanks is hard enough.
They have become my preferred sized for many things. I have always been a 1/2" fan, preferring them for all but laminate trimmer sized bits. There is quite a bit of added cost though, so I have been leaning toward the 8mm, at least in the mid-sized bits. Both the OF and MFK can use them.

Since most of the spiral fluted bits are solid carbide, the cut diameter and the shank diameter are usually the same. I don't really know why, as most hand held routers can't use many of them. CNC machines with ER type collets can fit nearly everything. Maybe that the market?

If you find an 8mm spiral cutter with 8mm shank, post it here.

Here you go, $95 at the Shaper store.

Woodpecker sells a 4.2” diameter variable speed router motor that uses ER collets, as a replacement for the discontinued Porter Cable 7518. Did anyone ever make a plunge base for that big router?

I wonder if [member=7266]jeffinsgf[/member] can put a bug in anyone's ear about that...

Here is the 8 mm shank / 8 mm cutter from Whiteside that I'm thinking of getting (the MD832). If you scroll down you will see they have several metric cutters available with various imperial and / or metric shanks.  The problem is that the 10 mm bits require a 10 mm collet, which I can't seem to get for the OF 1400 in the US.https://www.whitesiderouterbits.com/products/MD832

I also found these from Eagle America, but again, no down cut:https://www.eagleamerica.com/product/v106-0372-eagle-up-cut-metric/eagle-america-spiral-router-bits

P.S. If anyone knows how to get the 10 mm collet in the US, that solves my problem.

Does Festool make a 10mm collet? I thought the 3/8" (9.52mm) was the only size inbetween 8 and 12mm?

Ok there is one, at an eye watering price!

And just checked Festool.com which has it listed:

They definitely make it:
Collet SZ-D 10,0/OF 1400/2000/2200
for the OF 1400, OF 2000, OF 2200
Item number 494461https://www.festool.com/accessory/494461---sz-d-10,0of-140020002200

just make sure when you go to the link above you are logged in as an international user (it will say INT in the upper right corner).  if you change to US, the 10 mm option vanishes!

I needed to use the OF 1400 yesterday and look what I found inside the Systainer...a 10 mm Festool collet. I'm sure I ordered it from someone in the UK.

I don't think I have ever seen a 10mm collet, except for the ER type.
8mm bits are hard enough to get, that's a whole new can of worms.

CMT has a wide range of 10mm bits, evidently common in Europe for CNC.

A wide range of 8 mm bits also…I just wish they weren’t so difficult to purchase in the States.

This collet was easy peasy to purchase compared to purchasing CMT metric bits in the States.

I can only refer to the offer of Frazertools (https://www.fraisertools.com/en/) ... Quality and delivery speed are top ;-)

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] Let me know if you know where to purchase one from the US.  All the sites I've tried don't allow me to purchase from a US address.  I suppose I could have a friend get one for me and mail.

[member=75878]Josef[/member] I've never seen one offered in the US, I'm sure I ordered that from the UK or Germany. I'll look for the receipt and PM you if I find the source.

I stand corrected...I ordered it from Highland Woodworking in Atlanta, $42 plus $9 shipping.

[mention]Cheese [/mention] thanks for looking up that information!  I’ll see if they can still get it.

In other news I emailed Festool USA and they told me that it was not available in North American markets and that there weren’t plans to make it available.
