Hi,

I just bought a used pair of paradigm speakers 9S.  They have the beige colour veneer on the outside and have some scratches in them.

I was hoping to sand them down and stain as black speakers with filling in some of the scratches.

Does anyone have ideas on this or am I just nuts  [scared]

I have had good success using the combination of water base black stain, mixed with
India Ink purchased from a local craft store. This combination will cover just about any irregularities in the veneer and exposed substrate.

Test the black, it may have a purple tinge to it.

Fill the scratches first, use water based full trowel filler for floors.

Black lacquer with a clear over it may be your best bet.

Post a couple of pictures, depending on the wood, I may have other suggestions.

Don't sand 'em if you can help it. If you must, do it VERY carefully or you'll burn through the veneer.

I'd do as Tom said and stain 'em right over the old finish - almost like painting. And the best thing about going black is that it covers a multitude of sins...BT,DT.

When I'm doing a black finish, I usually use a black dye first, with a black stain over it.
