I'd appreciate some advice on a few built in projects I'd like to tacklet this winter
First project: Built-in storage for AV equip and media
When we built our house a few years ago the builder built a nook as I specified to hold AV equip, DVDs, video games etc. He finished it with drywall and no trim, so it looks crappy and unfinished. I want to trim it out such that it matches the style the trim in the house (painted white half-a**ed craftsman style, but that's a story for another time and another project on the list) Considerations, the wall just adjacent to the shelves holding the DVDs and board games may get a stone veneer treatment, so I will need to move that side of the built-in several inches in from the corner to provide enough space for trim. That series of shelves is already about 4" narrower than the shelves holding the stereo equip, so the wider shelves holding the AV equip will need to be narrowed as well to make their widths match.
I want white trim inside and outside framing the shelves. Should I trim over the drywall or remove it and work with the framing underneath the drywall?Should I build boxes that fit into the existing nooks or just trim out the existing nooks with paint grade plywood or MDF?

Second Project: Built in desk and shelves for son's bedroom
The attached pic below shows aroughly 28" deep and 6' wide nook that is designed to house a desk or chest of drawers in the room. I'd like to try to build a built in desk-top with storage shelves underneath for my first grade son as he would benefit from doing his homework somewhere quiet. I'm also considering some bookshelves or storage for above the desk (ceiling is 9'). I'm stuck on figuring-out the best way to build in the table top surface. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for your help.
