Bob,

How come Rockler is the only place I've seen that is discounting their demo tools?  I go to Woodcraft and Woodwerks as well as some websites (including yours) and haven't seen any other company discounting the tools even though they have demo tools with old style systainers.  I used to like the introductory discounts on the new tools.  Made me want to have the newest tool even more than I do now. [wink]

Tom

Tom,

I'm not in the position to answer for any dealer other than myself, but my guess is that it's their best interest to sell their current demo tools and buy a whole new set of new tools - in the new systainers. Over the years, I've sold a bunch of my demo tools, but I don't have a need to sell any at this time - but may change my mind in a month or two or three.  As a  side note, remember, most of the demo tools sold by dealers are not coming with warranties.

Sometimes the word "sale" makes people:
  a. buy before fully considering what it is you are really getting - sometimes a sale  really isn't a sale if you add it all up.
  b. makes some feel they were "had" because the "sale" was not in existence when they made their purchase.

Which is not to say that there isn't money to be saved, or good value to be had in some sales, but we all need to look at "sales" more closely before deciding one way or the other.

Bob

The comment Bob makes about most of the demo tools not comming with warranties bothers me. I purchased a demo Domino at Rockler this last weekeend, no mention was made regarding an exception to the warrranty, and the only thing noted on the receipt was a 20% store promotion. Do these tools not carry the standard Festool warranty? I would be hugely dissapointed in my local Rockler if that were the case, and would return the tool immediatly, as while significant, the sale wasn't "that" good.

[welcome] to the fog

i bought a ct22 last year demo. i got a warrenty (hopefully but form never came back ). i know im in a different country but you should too.
you should ring festool Asap and see if the warranty is registered or not. if not and it cant be, i would definetly retun it. i dont know what the law says in your country but in mine (we copy our laws from other countries regularly [blink]) it is an offence to sell some one something that you know you havent told them something about like that knowing they think contrary to that. there are also laws about implied value . if i went into a shop and bought a fairly good item for a similar price to a top of the range same type item there would be an implied quality level there. if the second item came with a 5 year warrenty and the first with 1 year . if the first broke after 2 years i could argue (in court with the ralivant state agency behind me) that i should get a refund or new one.

i got a new hard drive from dell after thay replayed my old broken one with a new one (their item and installer) which broke after 6 months. it only officially had 3month warrenty . i rang the state agency for consumer regulation (cant think of the name) , they said that there was an implied warrenty of 2 years or more hard use . they rang up dell on my behafe and i got a new hard drive free(whell i already paid for it [wink])

Jeff,

I want to be clear; Festool tools sold to dealers are no longer the "property" of Festool - they are totally owned by the dealer. Dealers can sell their demo tools (almost - I think) at will, but few dealers sell their demo tools in the first couple of years. The sale is between the dealer and the person buying the tool. Shane can correct me if I'm mistaken, but it is my understanding that no dealer owned demo tool sold by a dealer carries a warranty. Addendum added - this does not mean that dealers can't pony up if there were to be a problem with the tool; their choice.

I asked about the warranty when I bought the router. I asked if it had the 3 years and he said no. Then I asked if it just had 1 year and he said I think so. So I really didn't get a straight answer. I don't worry about that too much as, so far, every tool I've had to return had it's problems show up within the first few months. I didn't realize that the router wasn't covered by Festool - just Rockler. I don't feel real good about that.

Tom

I called the Rockler store where I purchased the Domino, and spoke to the manager. I explained my concerns, and while hesitant to answer, he admitted that there was no warranty on the demo units. I will be returning both the Domino, and the tenon assortment kit (simply because I am very put out) tomorrow. I like supporting my local stores, but I'll buy a new one from Bob, which oddly enough will come out slightly less expensive considering sales tax and all.

Never had good luck with Rockler. Never had any issue with Woodcraft and do want to buy local...as My services are local too.

Cheers,

I dont buy from Rocklers. I havent since they told me to take my dog out of the store. They lost about 2K in business that day( was going to buy a Kapex with the table and 2 crown stops)  and lots since.

They over charge as they buy in qty then repackage things and sell at higher per item price then I can get from my reg supplier.

I only went to them on Sundays because my supplier is closed then.

But since the dog thing a year ago, I have not darkened their doorway.

They mail out sale adds but when I would show up they would be sold out and no rain checks.

I think they do that with limited qtys just to get you in the door.

Anyway thats my opinion your welcome to it.

Disregard if ya want.

Well,
I checked with all 3 local Rocklers, All are out of the MFK 700 and their is NO warrenty as Bob said. The Rockler I was at today has all the closeout demos even lower. The lowest is a Trion barrel style for 50% off, the rest very 25%-40%. Really good prices even with no warrenty on the 40% and 50% items.

time to buy if the tools are in good shape, you will not beat 40-50% off

Any drills kicking around this store?

I'm wondering wouldn't the remainder of the 3 year warranty still be on demo tools like it is on used tools?  How would Festool know if I bought a demo or used tool (and would they care)?

I talked to Rockler again and they said that the tools didn't have a warranty but if I have any problems with the tools they would assist me.  Of course that could mean they look at the tools and say "yep it's broken all right - you should probably send that in to Festool and get it fixed". [blink]

Either way I'm going to keep the tools.  I've yet to have any problems with my Festools so I'm going to gamble that these are just as good too.

I am not a dealer and I am not in the know on this subject, but it would make sense that just like our tools are supposed to be registered with their serial numbers, so would dealers' tools.

Wouldn't be easy to ask directly to Festool customer support about warranty of demo tools from dealers?

What they tell you (Festool cs) will be the right answer, not matter what Rockler tells you.

Counting Bob, I've heard from 3 dealers that Festool does not offer a warranty on demo tools.  Some of the demo tools I looked at looked like they had never been used at all.  So I was wondering if, even if there is no warranty, Festool might repair a tool because it has been used so little that it was probably a manufacturing defect and not normal wear and tear?  It might not be a written policy, but I have heard of other manufacturers repairing products out of warranty when the product was defective.  But, I've said it before, I'm not too worried as I've yet to have to send one of my tools back to Festool for repair.

For those in Ohio, Rockler still has quite a few demo tools at 20% off and Mueller woodworking has a demo planer for $199 - more than 50% off (I think they are $410 new).

Tom

stopped by my Rockler today and they had 20-50% off on their demos.  I had been thinking about the ETS 125 (have the RO 125 - same size paper) so couldn't pass it up at half price.  I did notice that on all their fliers they stated "as is" and no factory warranty.  Perhaps some of the other stores were not as up front about the "no warranty" issue.  Now I just have to find a way to casually mention to the other half about my latest acquisition of the green stuff :)

Hit the local Rockler store today and picked up the barrel grip Trion at 50% off- couldn't pass that up. It looks like it's been used to cut about two feet of material in it's lifetime.

Of course, now they'll announce this afternoon that the Carvex will be available in the US on Monday........

I scored a couple of Festools at 40% off as well.  Frankly, I was surprised at how many demo tools they had left.

Make sure to check for everything that's supposed to be included before agreeing to the purchase.  The Rockler rep and I found some of my accessories in an empty "catch-all" Systainer they had in the rack.
