Rotex RO 125 Sander - Why no edge guard

Anyone know the reason why the RO125 FEQ does not have an edge guard option?

Jeff,

The earlier versions of the RO 125 did not have edge gaurds, the later models do have them. The older version can be "upgraded" to accept the gaurd, but it's a cost item.

Thanks for the reply.  I looked at the factory web site for the new RO125 and could not find any edge guard for sale.  Could you post the part number for the RO125 edge guard?

If the Ro 125 can be upgraded, can the 150 be upgraded?  i have asked this before, but maybe by now Festool has come up with the solution.

The Edge Guide is part     493-912  - $7.00

Nope, no retro available, but Dave M from Festool Repairs, has suggested using PVC sewer pipe. Give him a call 800-554-8741 for some creative uses.

This is a reprisal of an old thread, but since it is all relevant to my question, I thought I'd resurrect it rather than post a brand new thread.

To summarise earlier discussions, it seems that there is an old and new version of the Rotex RO125. The body of the old Rotex doesn't accept an edge guard (Order No 493912, Protector FESTOOL PROTECTOR 125FX) whilst the body of the new Rotex does accept one. If you have an old Rotex, and wish to fit an edge guard, you have to upgrade the body by buying the two halves of the new-style body (Order No 493783, Housing set) as well as the edge guard. Naturally, dismantling the Rotex like that will have warranty implications.

Now, to my question - how do you tell if you have the old model Rotex, or the new one? Does anyone have any close-up photos of the new model where the edge guard fits, or photos of the old model where the edge guard doesn't fit? Finally, did the old Rotex have a different part number from the new Rotex?

I ask because I have recently got a second-hand RO125, and it didn't come with an edge guard. The body looks as though it might accept one, but I'd like to compare my Rotex with photos of the old and new models so that I know what parts I need to order.

I've just gone and photographed my own RO125, which does not have the rib in your photo.

Looks like mine is the early model and your one is the late model. (The previous owner of my Rotex must have spent most of his time sanding plaster with it, but despite its appearance, it runs beautifully. New pad and selection of disks to be purchased shortly...)

Hopefully our comparison photos will be useful to other FOG members in the future.

This is the only part I don't quite understand. The photo of my sander (with the rather grotty pad) should be like your (old-model) one, whilst Brice's (new) sander should have a housing like the later housing that you have purchased. Is that right?

I believe you are correct.  I view the new RO 150 simply as being a twin  brother to the current RO 125, only the RO 150 grew to be larger.
