router 8mm collet

i need to get an 8mm collet for my of1400 router, the part code is 494460.
but i was wondering if you can get just the collet and not the nut? it is usual to have a collet nut with many collets or is festool unique on this one? its just they are £50 uk and seems a lot for a collet

I believe that Festool does NOT offer a collet only, they come standard with a nut.

Milwaukee used to offer a collet only however, the collets were so difficult to remove from the nut that I eventually went the Festool route and purchased both a collet and a nut.

If you find a suitable diameter tube that you can press over the collet to collapse it slightly it will remove with no effort.

The Festool Collet + Nut sets are bound as the collet is connected with the nut. Loosening the nut can not only tighten the collet it ALSO extracts it if stuck.

Also the Festool collets are made of a very-high-quality hardened yet flexible material. They are sure overbuilt, but my point being the price is not unjustified. They do cost a lot to make AFAIR. They are more in the high-end professional CNC collets territory than the hand-tool space. Quality/material being in question.

Pretty much all of the collets that are trapped by the nut are very difficult to remove and the potential for damage exists. Most of then seem to be that way nowadays though, because they release the bit so much easier.

As a side note, I just got a second Makita cordless compact router the other day and it came with an 8mm collet in the bag with the wrenches. I don't recall the first one having that? I sure don't know where it went, if it did. They are the older non-trapped version though, so it was just the collet, no nut.

I own four of the cordless Makitas. Two came with the 8mm collet, two didn't.

Good question. Until you mentioned it I'd forgotten since I don't own any 8mm bits.

Initially I only had a couple of them myself. I bought them for the MFK700 to use with the zero degree base for edgebanding.  The OF1400 can use them, but I use 1/2" bits in it. After I got the OF1010 is when I started looking a little more seriously at 8mm bits. They are not so easy to get, locally not at all.
I got the straight bits from Lee Valley in the beginning and never really looked any further. Having and liking the OF1010 got me searching more. I came across a set from Bosch. I think it was 15 pieces? All of them useful, none of the usual fillers. I found them on the Amazon UK website, shipped to the US. Seems silly to me. If Amazon has them, why not make it so you can find them on the US site? Then they actually shipped from Denmark.

You got me thinking, so I looked. Found another collet. I'm guessing we both got collets with each of our Makita compact routers and put them somewhere safe.
